"Final Fantasy VI" Heads to Smartphones, "FFVII" Could Follow if These Releases Do Well

FFVI on smartphones will be modified with crisper 2D visuals, less grinding

As Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita told Kotaku, a modified version of Final Fantasy VI is on its way to iOS and Android this winter. The smartphone version takes the original and modifies it with refined graphics—still 2D but sharpened like Final Fantasy V's mobile release—and adjustments to the battle system that allow for less grinding.

Final Fantasy VI on smartphones will be part of the Legacy series, which is getting ready to continue with Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. If these do well more could follow after FFVI, including the beloved Final Fantasy VII and beyond.

"We are aware that we have tons of VII fans," Tokita said. "We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."

Would a smartphone version of FFVII tide you over for a while?
