Pikachu is a Talking Detective in "Top Secret" Pokémon Game

Pikachu to say more than a couple syllables for the first time

The Pokémon Company is preparing to try something very different with the franchise's beloved Pikachu. For the first time, everyone's favorite electric rodent will be saying more than "Pika! Pika!" as it takes the role of a detective in the recently unveiled "top secret" Pokémon title and… speaks!

The mysterious Pikachu-centric game was teased leading up to the latest episode of "Professional—Style of Work," a show on Japanese TV network NHK. The episode featured Tsunekazu Ishihara, Pokémon producer and CEO of the Pokémon Company, who revealed Pikachu's role as the player's senior detective partner.

Pikachu's dialogue won't be as cutesy as his two-syllable exclamations, leaning more toward the hard-boiled style befitting a proper detective. Ishihara and the rest of his team initially felt it would be impossible to pull off, but ended up going for it, even at the risk of damaging Pikachu's popularity.

As seen in some of the motion capture images above, Pikachu will also be displaying more personality in this game. The mystery-solving fun all adds up to a massive project, which The Pokémon Company plan to have completed in two years.
