Akira's Katsuhiro Otomo Awarded Medal with Purple Ribbon by Japanese Government

2nd anime film director after Isao Takahata in 1998

The Japanese government announced recipients of the 2013 fall Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon. Purple ribbon is awarded to individuals who have contributed to academic and artistic developments, improvements and accomplishments. One of the 781 recipients was Katsuhiro Otomo (59), the manga/anime creator who is best known for his internationally acclaimed work Akira. His most recent anime work was an omnibus film Short Peace which was released in Japan this summer. Otomo and other recipients will have an audience with the Japanese Emperor in the Imperial Palace. He is the second anime film director who received the award after Isao Takahata in 1998. Joe Hisaishi, who has worked on many Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli films, also won it in 2009.
