"Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" Didn't Open So Hot in Japan

Lightning's third outing has the worst first week of the trilogy

The first week on the charts for Lightning's third game haven't exactly set Japan ablaze. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII sold 277,082 copies in its first week on PlayStation 3, putting it in last place behind the debuts of FFXIII and FFXIII-2

When Final Fantasy XIII hit stores in Japan in 2009 it pushed 1,501,964 copies in the first week, a number that dropped drastically when its sequel hit in 2011. Final Fantasy XIII-2 only opened with 524,217 sold in the first week, so Lightning Returns' relatively tepid debut follows the trend appropriately.

We'll have to see how Lightning's third outing fares in the west when it makes its way to North America and Europe in February 2014.
