In a bit of a surprise announcement this morning, Viz Media has announced that it has rescued the license to Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, previously released by Media Blasters and will be releasing the series once again on Blu-Ray and DVD. On top of the announcement of the new DVD release, the series will be added to Neon Alley's lineup on January 17th.
Here's how Viz describes the show:
MORIBITO: GUARDIAN OF THE SPIRIT is based on a bestselling collection of Japanese fantasy novels by author Nahoko Uehashi. The anime series tells the story of Balsa, a nomadic warrior who has vowed to atone for eight deaths in her past by saving an equivalent number of lives. On her journey, she saves a fallen prince who carries the burden of a sacred spirit – one who has the power to save the world and bring new life to a broken empire. But, she must first protect the Prince from those who would do him harm – including his own father, the Emperor, who has ordered his assassination!
The series also had the distinction of airing on the former Adult Swim Action block (now Toonami) with many viewers praising the series for its depth and gripping fantasy narrative. With the series getting a new lease on life in the US (and presumably better retail distribution) who's up to pick up this series again for the first time? Since I never got a chance to pick this up thanks to shaky availability the first time around, I'm definitely jumping on the new Blu-Ray.
