Bean-Throwing Festival Inspires Cute Oni Art

"Fairy Tail" author, "Kill La Kill" and "Space Dandy" animators and more post their oni pics

Earlier today, we mentioned Robocop attending a Setsubun festival, which in the transition between winter and spring is celebrated by driving out evil spirits by pelting them with roasted soybeans.

A favorite incarnation of these spirits is the ogre-like Oni, and thanks to Rumiko Takahashi's classic Urusei Yatsura manga, a favorite way to depict oni is as cute girls in tiger striped bikinis.

See some of the cute art that this has inspired...

A bit of how the tradition was handled in a localized released of Urusei Yatsura...

Fairy Tail's Hiro Mashima

Kōtarō Nakamori (Kill La Kill animation director in episodes 4, 12)

Chikashi Kubota (an animator on Space Dandy, Attack on Titan's second opening)
