VIDEO: "Pacific Rim" Sequel Confirmed For 2017, New Animated Series Also In Development

Director Guillermo Del Toro also confirms more tie-ins to 2013 sleeper hit

In a short message to fans of the 2013 film Pacific Rim, director Gullermo Del Toro has confirmed that a sequel to the film is in the works with key writing staff from the first film in Travis Beacham along with Zack Penn and is projected for a release in April 2017 according to entertainment site TheWrap. In addition, Del Toro has also confirmed further work on the Pacific Rim: Year Zero comic book tie-in as well as a companion animated series, of which no further details were confirmed.

While Pacific Rim was never expected to set any major records and struggled to break $100 million in the US during its initial theatrical run, the film did much better overseas, making over $300 million. The confirmation of a sequel should also make all of the fans that coalesced around the film happy, as the weak domestic box office performance was often held up as a key reason for the low probability of a sequel. If you've seen Pacific Rim, what did you think of it? Does it need a sequel or does the film stand on its own merits?
