Nintendo didn't officially announce The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D until last week, but it's been in the works for a while. Series producer Eiji Aonuma commented on the project over at Miiverse, revealing that the remake has been in development since 2011.
An excerpt from Aonuma's post:
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D was actually in development almost immediately after we finished working on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which was released in June of 2011. So although we’ve been working on the game for quite some time, we didn't want to say it was being developed until we were at a point where we could proudly say that this is not going to be just another remake and that it's going to be worth your time.
Aonuma also reassures fans of the game that they haven't removed its distinct look and feel, so it still lives up to its Japanese catchphrase, "this Zelda has a scary vibe."
