"One Piece" Author Eiichiro Oda Makes First Japanese TV Appearance

Don't get your hopes up about seeing his face…

A few days ago we mentioned that One Piece manga author Eiichiro Oda was set to make an appearance on Japanese TV. Well, it happened, marking the first time that the reclusive creator has appeared on TV for an interview. Don't let that make you think he's dropped the whole "reclusive" part of that equation, though.

Case in point...

During the Fuji TV segment, Oda is given a customized and signed Borussia Dortmund soccer jersey from Japanese player Shinji Kagawa. Despite appearing before our very eyes, you'll quickly notice he isn't about to show his face. Hey, manga authors gotta live in peace, too! While he does confirm that he is indeed Oda, announcer Daijiro Enami doubles up on that confirmation by getting him to draw Luffy.

He then tries on his new jersey and, to repay the favor to Kagawa, personalizes it for the soccer star. See the full video below.

Japanese fans had a little fun pointing out that he showed off his mangaka belly rather than his face. He'll be back on TV, most likely still keeping his face hidden, later this month to continue promoting One Piece Film Gold
