Tokyo-based company Hikidashi's official online store today started accepting pre-orders for three kokeshi (wooden dolls with a spherical head) inspired by Monkey D. Luffy, Zoro, and Chopper from the internationally popular anime based on Eiichiro Oda's long-running manga series One Piece, for release in the middle of October 2017. The three are the first kokeshi dolls for the company and the One Piece franchise's collaboration project, and more characters are planned to be added soon. The price for the 10cm-tall dolls is 4,536 yen (about 41 US dollars).
The kokeshi dolls are carved and painted by artisans at the "Usaburo Kokeshi" studio in Shinto-mura, Gunma Prefecture. Gunma is known as the top producing area of original kokeshi dolls in Japan. The studio was founded by Usaburo Okamoto, who started making kokeshi in 1950.
