Netflix Relaxes with "Rilakkuma and Kaoru" Anime

1st anime adaptation based on laid-back teddy bear mascot character will be released worldwide in 2019

Previously announced back in July of 2017, new details are now available about the Rilakkuma and Kaoru stop-motion anime, an upcoming original series based on San-X's super-chill teddy bear mascot character. The main staff for Rilakkuma and Kaoru includes:

  • Screenplay: Naoko Ogigami
  • Creative advisor: Aki Kondo
  • Director: Masahito Kobayashi
  • Production work: San-X
  • Supervision: San-X "Rilakkuma Team"
  • Animation production: Dwarf

San-X describes the concept of the Rilakkuma character as follows:

“Rilakkuma” means “Bear in relaxed mood”.
At all time and everywhere Rilakkuma goes Rilakkuma is continuously lazy and relaxed.
Rilakkuma is totally stress-free and also doing things on his own pace.
Rilakkuma is someone impossible to be hated by others.
You will be dragged into Rilakkuma’s world and become lazy and relaxed while watching what everything Rilakkuma does.

The story of the Rilakkuma and Kaoru anime revolves around Kaoru, an office worker, who returns to her apartment one day to discover that an extremely lazy teddy bear, Rilakkuma, has moved in. Although Rilakkuma is perpetually relaxed and doesn't pull its own weight with chores, Rilakkuma sometimes dispenses valuable life advice.

Rilakkuma and Kaoru will consist of 13 episodes, and each episode will be approximately 11 minutes in length. The series will be distributed worldwide by Netflix in 2019.
