According the latest box office report for the weekend of December 16-17, Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: Oniou no Fukkatsu (The Return of The Oni King), the fourth feature film in the Yo-kai Watch anime franchise earned 399 million yen from the 355,200 ticket sales in its debut weekend. It was only 65.6% of the opening weekend gross of the third film The Great Adventure of the Flying Whale and the Double World, Meow! released in last December, clearly showing the franchise's declining popularity.
The fourth film is expected to earn around 2.5 billion yen from its domestic run, less than one third of the total gross of the franchise's first and most successful film, Yo-kai Watch: Tanjou no Himitsu da Nyan! that gathered 7.8 billion yen in 2014.
Helped by the strongest competitor's downfall, Disney-Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi took the top
spot in both the gross (1.1258 billion yen) and the ticket sales (737,467), which was 90.4% of Star Wars:
The Force Awakens in 2015. Both of the last two Star Wars films, 2015's The Force Awakens and 2016's
spin-off Rogue One were defeated by the Yo-kai Watch films in the ticket sales ranking in their opening
weekend in Japan.
