Amazing! A Masterpiece that has become one of my all-time favorites!
I had absolutely no expectations going into this one. I hadn't read, or even heard of the manga. The title and posters were intruiging as well as the quick plot synopsis. After the first episode I had to see where it was going. After the second episode I was hooked. I love the animation; the style fits perfecly with the mood the creators were trying to set. The music and pacing were spot on as ...

    Atmosphere, Tension, Psychosis
If I described the plot of this show to you, you might say, "What? That's it? That's all? That's the big deal?" Yes and no. The plot is only the surface of Flowers of Evil, and the trick to it is that it takes these seemingly mundane characters and situations ... and spins them into much, much more. I have never seen a show that relies so heavily on establishing a heavy, oppressive ...

Approach this with an open mind.
I'm finding that generally speaking, fans of the manga dislike this anime. That is because though the stories are similar(of course), the rotoscoping is the only the only thing separating this adaption from it's source material. Frankly put:

-The pacing is different(the anime being a lot more slowly and oddly paced that than the manga)
-The anime is A LOT darker overall
    -The manga better ...

    Intense, compelling, and artistic
I didn't quite know what to expect going into the show; rotoscoping has always been really hit or miss in animation (Ralph Bakshi on Line One), but in this case, I think it was the right choice given the subject matter. The awkwardness and heightened drama in the script really popped because of the naturalistic acting and realistic look, foregoing the usual "too pretty for real life" character ...

    F.o.E. - Unique and Disturbing
Flowers of Evil is an anime unlike any other. It is so far removed from the typical that it almost becomes an important anime to bear the discomfort of watching. There aren't any of the things one comes to expect from an anime, even in the animation- which is incredible even if you grow to dislike the storyline. It is both a refreshing and shocking experience.
    I won't lie, it's tough to ...

    A Beautiful Story about People
A fantastic story about the lives of school kids. Deep, one could even say pretentious, beautiful and moving, with one of the most unique looking art styles in an Anime you will ever see. It might take some time to get used to, but if you want an anime where the story is about character interactions rather then Mecha and Harems, this is the one for you.

    Fantastic piece of Intellectual Art
This anime is a wonderful piece of art and feels like an homage to Baudelaire’s “Les fleurs du mal” (The evil flowers). Flowers of Evil draws upon Baudelaire’s poetry and ideas to expose the viewer to an apparent paradox in life; that the ideal and sinful must co-exist. Following Baudelaire’s work, this paradox is symbolized through two female characters. Nanako is introduced as the pure ...

This Show ... This Show ...
I cannot explain my love of this show. There are entire episodes in which nothing happens and yet I can't stop watching. I love the rotoscope and the beautiful backgrounds ... and the ending theme is like the worst acid trip ever. Definitely not for everybody. Also, YAMADA!!!!!!!

Not for Everyone But Exceptional None the Less
Yes yes, i know the art style is mediocre in some peoples mind, and some question the idea that it is even anime, and i know it is a dramatic change from the manga, i happen to think this art style fits the plot much better than the original. After watching the first few episodes of this anime i took a look at the manga and was confused due to the very moe esk style it presented. I did not read ...

Clearly not for every Anime fan...
This Anime is not for everyone. It has a very specific target audience. It is for the most part, a real life drama with a LOT of sprinkled metaphor in the series. If you read a lot of books, and prefer social outcast or other points of view story lines you're going to love this series. The whole point of this series the "abnormal", or for everyone to not be the same. The Anime delivers that ...
