Strictly speaking, Byzantium is not really Rome unless you speak of the time when Justinian's empire reconquered most of Italy in the 6th century.
I always thought the time period for after the 3rd century was just called Late Antiquity, where do these names come from? Today is supposed to be the anniversary of its collapse..

all hail Caesar! Republic was pretty much the climax and the immediate start of the downfall of Rome.

I chose Byzantium since it focused more on self preservation than conquest, because when you said "support" I thought you meant approve of. As for my favorite, I would choose the Principate since it was Rome's height.

Glory to the Emperor! proud legions of Rome go forth to unconquered lands! Roma invicta!

Principate, it was within the this time frame that Rome was at its absolute height militarily, economically, culturally, and held the most territory. It wasn't called Pax Romana for nothing.

I didn't like the Roman empire I went to school in an unconquered region being told stories like Boudicca how the Iceni people were screwed over and always saw their empire an aggrandised tragedy that had a positive long term effect.
