I'm curious if anybody has ever watched anime that made you think "Good God, what the heck did I just watch?!" Something you'd be embarrassed to admit about or an anime that made you feel disgusting afterword?

For me there's a couple.

Monster Musume- Was so confused after that one. Felt so violated
Oreimo- Actually thought it was an innocent anime about a brother and sister loving each other in a strictly family way. It wasn't.
Love Live & Sunshine- the plot, or lack there of, is so cheesy. Makes me cringe, but I can't stop watching it.
High School of the Dead- Came for the zombies, stayed for the obligatory jiggle boobs.

I'll second Oreimo. It started off good and I was glad that the title felt misleading at first, but then the second season gathered up everything good about it, made it better, then completely threw it all out the window and somehow kept getting worse in the OVAs.

There's also Glasslip. I will never forget what it felt like waiting 13 weeks hoping to finally understand what was going on and then getting pissed when nothing happened at all. It gave us many questions and... that's it. No attempt to even answer a single question. The viewers are just left at the exact same spot where the show started without learning anything. Spending that time watching a literal dumpster fire instead would've been more productive than watching Glasslip. I'm not even exaggerating when I say a goddamn chicken was the most likable character.

Glasslip, huh? The way you described it sounds like the anime equivalent to the tv show Lost. 6 seasons, over 50 questions and not a single answer by the end of the series.

I remember seeing a picture of Glasslip and thought the art was nice. Thank god I didn't waste my time with that one.

Oh and another one I regret watching was Date A Live. Something about intergalactic high school waifus from a different dimension and in order to stop the waifus from taking over earth, main character boy has to make all the girls fall in love with him in order to steal their powers by kissing them so that they don't kill everyone. It's so stupid. I couldn't even finish that series.

BTOOOM. By far the worst I have ever seen (start-to-finish) so far.

I've seen worse, but I like to pretend those simply don't exist.

I don't have any major regrets.

I wasted time on several anime that I never really got into.

I enjoyed a few anime until they ended with very depressing endings (e.g. Akame ga Kill)

There is often some uncomfortable stuff that happens in anime too, but that happens in movies too (Tarantino anyone?) Although I am not a Tarantino fan. Although I did like the movie Fury, and there were a few uncomfortable scenes in that movie as well.

There's no way to know how you will react to something until you try it though, so no real reason to regret watching.

I guess the closest thing to regret that I've had recently was Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor. It really seemed like it would be good or at least decent in the beginning, but that hope did nothing but deflate as each episode crept by. I mean, it was okay, but I'll never get that time back.

I do have mixed feelings about series with no closure and a hideously long manga behind it (or worse, a light novel series) that I'm not interested enough to dive into.

I also hate-watch series, too. You know, series that you don't necessarily love or even like, but the story has hooked you in to the point that you HAVE to know how it ends up. Most recently, the third season of The World God Only Knows was like this for me.

The bigger problem here is that very few Light Novels get translated. There is certainly a dearth of officially translated Light Novels, and with fan translation projects, many of them take months to translate a single chapter, and there is no telling when they will just abandon the project all together. It's worse than waiting for a George R.R. Martin novel.

The one that comes immediately to mind given that it's recently been given another push by CR is Rokka. The entire show was just an exercise in wasting your time. It introduces some potentially interesting characters with a generally quality art style. Then it goes and locks them all in the equivalent of a windowless room and pretends it's some sort of exciting mystery despite being nothing but a mess of cliches. The characters never get to evolve and you can't even really appreciate the art. And, if that wasn't bad enough it ends the season with a near complete reset of the situation such that there was actually no point in the show even existing in the first place.

The other one that I think of is Saekano. It plays at being a smart parody of the harem genre and even has some pointed interesting things to say about it and anime/games/fandoms in general. There's clearly some intelligent people behind the scenes. But the entire thing is so wrapped up in the genre it's trying to comment on that ends up falling into the exact same traps it's been criticizing the entire time. It ends up being a hypocritical mess that doesn't totally fall apart until the last few episodes of it's 2 season run. It actually feels like an insult to the viewer for getting invested and feeling hopeful in the first place.

I don't usually feel invested enough to watch something I'm not enjoying and it's rare for me to feel that "so bad it's good" vibe (Hey, Phantasy Star Online anime, I'm looking at you). When a show actually actively wastes my time like the above examples do, however, is when I regret watching.

I haven't seen Lost so I don't know what the cast must've been like, but I could've at least enjoyed watching a show about nothing if the characters were likable enough. The characters in Glasslip were either boring, stupid, or annoying while they all tried to act like their lives revolved around one big philosophy class but failed to do or say anything meaningful. The art was the only reason I watched it since the promo gave off a lot of Nagi no Asukara vibes, which was made by the same studio and was still fresh in everyone's minds at the time.

Also, I'm kinda surprised that about half the responses in this thread so far have been shows I liked.

Hanamaru Kindergarden- I thought it was cute at first, then I realised the male MC annoyed me
Durarara- found it boring & the constant addition of new characters made it hard to follow
