Hey guys,

What was the first anime that you ever watched?

Mine was Sailor Moon and then followed Dragon Ball Z.

not including anime I watched in my childhood like doraemon and nintama, bakemonogatari was probably my first exposure to more adult(?) anime.

Kinda hard to say since I watched many shows made in Japan but westernized heavily so I wouldn't consider them anime. I'm not sure which was first but Crying Freeman, Castle Cagliostro & Dirty Pair were some of the first where I thought "Hey, this ain't Looney Toons. This is different."

How many times this type of threat keeps popping? Ah well.

So yeah, not counting the ones in childhood, i could say Dragon Ball Z which i saw in... around 2004-2006, can't exactly remember the year but i do remember that i enjoyed it.

However, the first official anime i've watched (and completed) was Soul Eater. That's how i became an otaku. My only regret is that i found this new hobby of mine "too late" (i was 19 back then).

If Voltron counts, then Voltron. I guess it was an American show, but Toei worked on it.

The first time I actually realized I was watching anime instead of just regular cartoons was probably either Tenchi Universe or Dragon Ball Z.

I was a standard-issue 70s-80s kid, so it was Warriors of the Wind (Heavily-edited Nausicaa) and Robotech for me.

The first "actual" anime I watched were things like Record of Lodoss War, Bubblegum Crisis, Robot Carnival, Black Magic M-66, Devil Hunter Yohko and such. Basically I watched whatever fan-subbed VHS copies I could get through friends in high school, so I always watched series out of sequence and missed a lot of episodes.

Maison Ikkoku was the first series I watched completely in sequence, beginning to end. Also my introduction to a larger anime world that didn't involve robots, monsters or superpowered types kicking the crap out of each other.

The first I watched was Speed Racer in syndication back in the early '70s. There various others that made it to US syndication that I watched from the 70s through the 80s (Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato, Gaiking, UFO Robo Grendizer, Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman, Megazone 23, and Robotech are some that I remember). Macross Frontier got me back into anime. Things are so much better now. It is easier find anime and much easier to watch it. Plus, we now have the option of watching subs or dubs. And, the dubs are so much better. We no longer have to deal with westernized names and shows badly edited to match what they thought the audiences could handle.

Now, all of you need to get off my lawn.
