I vaguely remember watching Gatchaman / G Force and Little Atom / Astroboy as a child in the 80's.

Then Neon Genesis Evangelion on late night TV in the late 90's.

Then nothing except the occasional cinema release of a Ghibli film until about 2 1/2 years ago when I watched the first 12 episodes of SAO and was completely blown away by it.

It is a popular series to crap on but it inspired me to purchase a Crunchyroll Premium sub and to start watching anime again after a 2 decade hiatus.

I'm really not sure. I was too young to know I was watching anime but I vaguely remember a young horse being forced to jump over a river by its mother... might have been it. Can't name it.

Technically, when I was like 5 and visiting family in Taiwan, I saw an episode of Gundam Wing on TV and it scared the crap out of me.

But beyond a very vague memory, my first anime was FLCL.

I just have great luck, huh?

Evangelion. Prior to that I thought any animation was pretty much "cartoons" with a few outliers like Heavy Metal, Watership Down and Lord of the Rings that I saw years after they were released (my older brother introduced me to them). I seriously believed there was only a brief period in the 70's or 80's where they tried making "adult" cartoons and then stopped. I was always bummed I'd never get to see one made in my time.

When I first saw Evangelion I was like "This is amazing!" up until the end when I was all "Wha...What was that?!" I was too young to get a lot of the themes but it still blew me away.

That was the first time I'd heard about this niche Japanese style called "anime."

The first for me was Speed Racer. It just caught my eye for some reason, and eventually drew me into other anime options. Dubbed and edited who knows how severely with my basic-cable-only stuff available at the time, but yeah.

The first anime I watched excluding childhood shows like Pokemon, was Akame ga Kill. I'm very glad this was the first anime I watched because it left a good impression on me and I continued to watch animes similar to this and build my appetite and respect for Japanese literature etc.
