It's fine either way as long it's a realistic war story. Mecha is just one element for your story, right?

Yeah. I'm just using mecha as an element for my story. Do you know of any military science-fiction books though?

Not really, but I wish you the best of luck.

pick a Gundam, a few within the area and you're going to catch on to mech and politics, since Gundam are the gods of mech so to speak. there's nothing wrong with wanting to write something challenging, that's what writing is all about, a challenge. you could wing it, but it could turn out good or bad in some cases. not putting yourself to a challenge and not writing it at all, basically you will hit your limits and will learn nothing, nor be able to advance and be better. Other mech related things Patlabor, Appleseed, Pilot Candidate (short and was never finished), and A.D. Police. hope this helps some.

Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet" series' are pretty good on spaceship sci-fi with the "What the fuck are high command doing?" aspect fleshed out with some civilian politics as well. Also James SA Corey's "expanse" series seems to be shaping up into "How not to run a wide spread empire 101" if you want some brushfire wars to throw Mechs at where the pilots and ground troops aren't 100% certain they're the good guys.

I'd read up on some historical war (recent rather than 1300's) politicking if you want to have dubious mecha combats going on so you can have character conflicts.

A war can be used to hide a failing government's shortcomings under the guise of National Pride and War Shortages.

It can be used to make sure the guys in power in "3rd world shithole with oil X" are favourable to you, even if only because you put them in power (other resources are available)

The British opium trade into China is a lovely, if old, example of corporate corruption starting a war - "We want to sell opium to China and you, the government, want the tax money. Go invade and everyone is happy. Except the Chinese emperor, but fuck him because he said we couldn't sell our drugs in his country"

The added bonus to that last one is you can have your corporate overlord act like a whiny teenage brat, which always goes down well for a villain who gets both barrels to the chest at the end.

There are actually books for writing different kinds of stories, and specific story elements. I have one for 'Science Fiction and Fantasy' and another 'Conflict and Suspense.' It's not a blueprint to publishing your own novel but they're good with explaining common themes, world building, plot, different ways to express mood, showing the same scene in different ways, etc.

Check some libraries. Even if they don't have books wholly about topics, there are probably some books with some of everything in them.

EDIT: Similarly I bet there are lots of writers' blogs with tidbits.

Use todays politics as a background. Clintons mecha forces are building new and more powerful units to crush Trumps force. N. Korea is testing new mecha units even though they're not allowed to. Putin has used his mecha units to support somewhere that doesnt have mech units and so on. To me this gives you the political background.
