In my opinion, it's the majority of mecha anime that I watched from beginning to end.
On the surface, it's either a super prototype or ace custom decimating waves of mass-produced models like a bad-ass. But once either of those two different types of mecha are put together with a mass-produced army of its very own, and both armies are led by their respective commanding officers, it all of a sudden becomes a battle to see which army can capture or kill the other's commanding officer first, while protecting its own, with the super prototypes and ace customs assisting them along the way.
You know, like Code Geass? That used Chess metaphors up the wazoo! From Lelouch and CC symbolizing a king and queen, respectively, to Suzaku and Kallen symbolizing a white and black knight, also respectively. Not only was it an awesome mecha series, but it also utilized a slew of Chess metaphors to reinforce Code Geass' war drama elements.

High School DxD tries, although chess is a gimmick there, not a metaphor.

A lot of fights in Hunter x Hunter and JoJo felt like this. A lot of cerebral mind games going on during fights.

Death Note. It started off exceptionally then just got boring. Monster is LEAGUES ahead of Death Note. Monster has much more subtle yet deep and thought provoking psychological developments. The themes were conveyed very intricately and in an engaging manner. Death Note just became predictable. Monster was not afraid to explore the true aspects of this world we all live in, from the haunting suffering some face to the luxurious wealth and comfort others face. Death Note was just Light making a move and L conveniently having the same thought processes and coming to unnaturally accurate conclusions without properly developed depth.
