Fellow Floridian here. My area is expected to avoid the worst of it, but I doubt we'll avoid it entirely. Good luck to you.

Also, people have apparently forgotten that the tap water in this state is quite drinkable.

I know nothing about it, but it sounds really scary. Good luck.

I live far away, so i don't have to worry about any hurricanes. to those in the path, i wish you good luck (in the best possible manner).
if you haven't already, seek shelter or (preferrably) leave the state. just take your most precious belongings and leave asap!
as the governor said

Remember, we can rebuild your home. You can get your possessions again, but you can't get your life back.Regardless of which coast you live on, be prepared to evacuate. This storm can change.

i know at least 1 guy from MAL who made a thread about possibly not being able to login again (even if he's alive, electricity would likely be down for a very long time)

I'm not comfortable giving out my exact location, but I'm in the panhandle. I'm in a relatively low-risk area; Hurricane might miss us entirely, but we're still making preparations, and feeling a lot of the same economic effects, such as gas prices going up and things like water selling out.

the hurricane is said to be far stronger and deadlier than hurricane Andrew of 1992.
this is what was left of Florida Home Park after Andrew happened:

Irma is going to be worse than above.

news report of Andrew
reporter (paraphrased): some people compared the devastation with one you'd find in a war zone. can you verify this?
veteran (paraphrased): it's actually worse than some places in which we were able to handle enemy attacks well.

CBS Miami: Hurricane Andrew: A Look Back 25 Years Later (3 min long)
crew: "this is like someone nuked this whole area"
volunteer doctor: they're without their water, without their electricity. (this is) more like a 3rd world country right now.

@eggrollsama maybe show them the videos about Andrew and say it will be far worse than it did?

Ft. Lauderdale is going to get hit really hard based on pretty much every projection. Not to scare you, you already know I'm sure. Stay safe friend, I'm hoping it won't be as bad as they're predicting.

i now learned there's Hurricane Jose, which went from "Tropical Storm" to "category 1 hurricane" to category 3 in 1 day.
as if Irma wasn't enough, Jose is following it to make lives even more miserable.

The most recent projection I saw for Jose had it veering off to the east away from Florida. Lets hope they are right this time.

Your parents are pretty stupid to stay. "Oh I don't want to break down", but it's fine to die in your home. Good logic. I hope you at least have a brick home build with hurricanes in mind.

If you are getting the eye, it's very eerie. You can take that time go outside and look at the damage, but it will start up again at some point.
