One piece of advice. If it's really bad out there and you expect to be without power longer than two or three days, empty out your refrigerator, clean it completely. And do not leave the refrigerator doors closed. I knew someone who did not do that, and the entire refrigerator was lined top to bottom with insect eggs and maggots.

Most people in South Florida are going to be getting rid of their refrigerators because of contamination. Same thing happened after Katrina, and is happening in Houston right now. Be prepared to wait a good while to get a new refrigerator, unless you're lucky. Order a new one as soon as possible.

Worth remembering: Today marks the 117th anniversary of the worst disaster in US history, the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, which killed between 6,000-12,000.

I first read about this from a Washington post article during Harvey that said "white racists" could use the storm to commit mass lynchings. They used that Galveston hurricane as an example, because a bunch of looters were either executed or forced at bayonet point to help cremate the dead.
Funny what actually happened during Harvey though... Good ole boys with Confederate flags on their boats helped rescue people regardless of color, while looters shot at them and SJWs cried about the flags on twitter and gloated about the "white, climate change denying rednecks that voted Trump" getting killed. Despite the areas worst affected had a majority blue vote.

Rush Limbaugh - who called Irma coverage a liberal hoax - has decided to flee the liberal hoax.

Fellow Floridian here. My area is expected to avoid the worst of it, but I doubt we'll avoid it entirely. Good luck to you.

Also, people have apparently forgotten that the tap water in this state is quite drinkable.

LOL yeah. I'm in South Carolina and expect to receive some of the storm (though probably significantly weakened) and idiots here bought up all the bottled water as soon as the news of the hurricane dropped. I'm just sat here like "do you not have any bottles or jugs or pitchers or pots and pans you can just store normal old tap water in?"

Because natural disasters never existed until after the industrial revolution, right?

On topic, I hope you have guns and ammo as well as a safe place OP. Looters during Harvey were shooting at everybody, other survivors, firefighters, cajun navy etc.

The ferals will take advantage of law enforcement being tied up and loot even non flooded areas.

Nobody ever lied ! Yea Right! BTW Your last post above was kinda bad but I didnt report it to the mods !

If you can't make it at least lend them your energy! Search Facebook for scream like Goku at Irma in Clearwater Sunday! My laugh of the day was my local Publix had no toilet paper left! Mind you after Andrew lack of toilet paper was not a big issue. I really must invest in a flashlight that uses C-cells plenty of those around. Making sure everything is charged up and laundry gets done. Have a full tank of gas if it is really bad. Amazon closed at 18:00 yesterday. So off work with pay untill the all clear goes out. Now just have to see how long power goes out for. So I will be on outlook for monkeys, their will be monkeys
For all my fellow travelers in Florida all that is left is just to EMBRACE THE SUCK!!!! Not much else to do at this stage.

I've lived through several typhoons, categories 4 to 5. My favorite device so far was a palm pilot that used disposable AAA batteries, I could read ebooks with the backlit screen. The next best option is an e-ink device, either from amazon or barnes and nobles. The charge can last weeks, plus, with one power bank can be charged in theory more than once, so you would be covered for awhile until the power comes back on.
