Note: Realized Fall 2017 was just beginning, not ending. Screw my dumb ass.

I think I have seen quite a bit of anime being praised here, and a great deal I can agree with, like Kemono Friends to an extent (I suppose it is overhyped, and while I normally do not normally care for public opinion on most anything, the near memetic nature has to be considered) to Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, to Boku No Academia, I decided for reasons possibly elating to my overly critical nature, what is the worst or most disappointing anime you have watched in 2017, from Winter to Fall?

Guidelines:Anime being plural here, and so for discussion sake, list at least one anime you disliked or were disappointed by with supporting details as to why. More than one entry is fine, you may even post a wall of text, but they are not required. This thread is to be just a one minute panacea to disappointments and anger, not essay class.

Do try to respect other's opinion.

Handshakers

-Literally cannot see anyone who disagrees with this being "worst", if not incomprehensible.

Scum's Wish

-I just do not see the point of terrible, stupid people acting like terrible, stupid to other terrible, stupid people in a drama caused primarily by a crowd of terrible, stupid people. Hasn't anyone ever heard of walking away?

Renai Boukun

-Terrible, breakneck pace.

-Large inconsistency between the darker moments and the comedic ones.

Sin: Nanatsu No Taizai

-I thought we were going to a "Battle and undress a demon lord of the week" type of thing, where we battle and strip demon lords on an episodic basis. However, it fails as an ecchi due to how inconsistently the nudity is applied, with too much focus given to the story past the halfway point, whereas the first few episodes were consistently full of nudity and no plot.

A large mess that does not know what it wanted to be.

Jigoku Shoujo: Yoi No Togi

-Terrible, nonsensical, cheap. Well, cheap is my main problem. The lack of effective details makes it particularly ugly to look at, and with subpar animation for movements, it is the very essence of eye damaging. What really captures the essence of cheap is that this is truly only 6 episodes worth of new content, whereas the last 6 episodes are reruns from the first season 12 years ago.

You mean to tell me you (Studio, Producer, etc) not only produced only just 6 new episodes in total, but were not willing to spare the expense of making half a season even look like it was produced in 2017?

What a cashgrab. Shame on you.

These are the ones I finished.

Edit: Previous rant for this post, before I decided it is far too wordy for this thread's purpose.

I can count the 2017 anime I've seen on one hand (maybe with an extra finger or two), so take my comments with a grain of salt:

Worst: Ero Manga Sensei

This anime is trash incarnate, but I wouldn't really call it disappointing because it makes sure you know how trash it is going in. It is a garbage pail of a show full of creep grossness and easily is the worst show I've seen this year.

Most Disappointing: My Hero Academia

I don't think any other show falls into the category of "Disappointing" this year. I've seen a few great shows that lived up to my expectations or surpassed them (and one trash show that I knew was trash going in) so MHA stands alone as something that has a ton of potential, but I feel just doesn't execute as well as it needs to.

Ah, I see. Sequels do tend to attract a fair amount of disappointment. Jigoku Shoujo was a pleasant surprise to hear from in so many years, but I think a fair amount of people agree with me on that Season 4 has no real reason to exist at all, or at 6 new episodes.

I do need to see My Hero Academia. Seems neat.

Eromanga Sensei is something I have put off finishing for a long time, despite my self proclaimed role as an Onii-Chan, so I cannot say much, but the perversion factor is much more noticeable from what I have seen.

I thought sexual intercourse was just nude hugging at the age of 12, and Sagiri is already a hentai artist at that age.

*thinks*

Hmm. This has been that rare year without any genuine howlers (... IMO), but I can point fingers at two things. One is almost anything by Haoliners (e.g. Spiritpact), and two is Rewrite for being a poor adaptation (again, IMO).

Hey, if the thread remains lively enough, it'll still be around when people are discovering their Fall disappointments.

Thinking back right now and only including the shows I spent enough time with to make a definitive call on either way, I can actually only think of one show bad enough to make this list.

Saekano
(aka How To Raise a Boring Girlfriend) - Season 2 within the given time period
It spent nearly two seasons being a parody of the harem genre that included smart commentary about anime/manga/games/fandom/etc. It actually seemed largely to respect it's female cast by giving them most of the actual development, making the fan service so stupid and blatant it was almost never actually "sexy" and by making the MC blatantly unlikable. Then in the last few episodes it tossed all that out the window and just went straight for the stupid harem BS it had been making fun of the entire time including making all of the previously likable female characters still have their lives completely revolve around the unredeemable MC. A complete waste of time.

Let's see here. I'll break things down by season.

Worst of Winter 2017: Forest Fairy Five

This brought back bad memories of Naria Girls where there's just too much casual chatter to go along with some awful CG animation. Definitely not something that can even be called an anime.

Biggest Disappointment of Winter 2017: Hand Shakers

I don't know where to begin with this show. I had some hopes for this show as it's by the same guys who did an excellent job on K, but everything just fails here. From bland characters to a story that doesn't go anywhere, to a really cringeworthy first episode that did too much inappropriate stuff, and an improper animation style, this show had me calling this show Head Shakers as that's what I did following each episode that I managed to get through.

Worst of Spring 2017: Seven Mortal Sins

No doubt what the worst show of the season was. The fanservice is terrible, the characters are awful, and pretty much everything was as trashy and slutty as it could be. At least to this show's credit they were aiming for trashy and slutty.

Biggest Disappointment of Spring 2017: Clockwork Planet

Seeing that this is by the same guy who did No Game, No Life that I was expecting some of that goodness to transfer over, and it didn't. Just about the only reason I watched it is because of AnchoR and at least it was good when she was around. But it took four episodes to get to her with some really bad storywriting, and in particular the reason why Kyoto was being purged.

Worst of Summer 2017: Battle Girl High School

I always feel uneasy about these kinds of shows that are meant to market a mobile game, and that's exactly what this show does. No story, girls are too hard to keep track of, and nothing really happens. On top of that, the magical girl outfits are really tacky making this show not even worth watching for that.

Biggest Disappointment of Summer 2017: The Reflection

With big names like Stan Lee and Hiroshi Nagahama behind this show that I was expecting to see something spectacular. What I wasn't expecting was to see something that's more like reading a comic book than watching a superhero anime show.

There is no such thing as bad anime, only those who picked the wrong anime to watch.

Well I gotta disagree with you on Scum's Wish; I thought that show was absolutely amazing.

The Worst is probably just some dumb thing like Forest Fairy Five or whatever.

My Most Overrated is Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon for sure.

My Most Disappointing is probably either Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho, Sakurada Reset, or Koi to Uso.

I heard of it, seems like a cheap children's animation. (Then again, I thought so about Kemono Friends) As for Scum's Wish, I think the show cannot be worth a watch with the premise itself. My dislike is more akin to sub-genre hate, as I see little worth in viewing any work in this category. This category I define as a subset of a human perpetuated drama that concerns people being awful to one another while still actively contributing to the problem itself.

Essentially, I define it as...

Girl A: Is he cheating on me? He is, isn't he? I will cheat on him!

Boy A: Is my girlfriend cheating on me! I know, I will cheat on her, then spread rumors about much of a whore she and her sister is!

Sister A: Is he spreading rumors about my sister? I know, I will bang his ex while he...

You get the point.

This is no different to me than One Tree Hill, The O.C., or The Jerry Springer Show. I consider these types of shows to be juvenile and worthless, void of anything that I, as a being with common sense, would not have already known. Scum's Wish is nowhere near as "original" as the fans would say, and it seems to appeal to a base desire for train wrecks arising from meaningless conflict among terrible people.

While Scum's Wish succeeds in its aim, I just find it to be lacking in any value, or anything to say, other than "Humans are petty and terrible", which believe me, I know. Despite such a drama being overly concerned with humans, it portrays only the most shallow, vapid excuses of one, those relinquished of personal rationale other than seeking pleasure and vengeance. In this manner, the plot lines often operate as a cause and effect. When a show like that is created, with completely inane and self destructive beings, I fail to see any of the "intellectually thoughtful" that many fans claim come from these shows. It is just a fictional and grotesque rube-goldberg device to me.

Most of these shows tend to flourish on tangents, or in other words, from point A to point B to point C, while most of the audience forgets what Point A is.

It is interesting I suppose, but after a while, I still cannot see a point other than one similar to masturbating or exercising, that being they are natural urges.

I hope I do not offend you.

I wouldn't call it original either, but I definitely think it has more value than you're giving it, and I think it was executed extremely well. I don't know if you watched the whole thing, but it actually made a pretty good point in the end. I really enjoyed it all the way through, but it was the ending episode that elevated it to where it is now for me. As for the appealing to base desires part, I don't see anything wrong with that. It's honestly more impressive to me that, in my opinion, it mixed parts that would attract more popularity with parts that really gave it meaning and had it all come together in a complete package by the end. I can definitely see why someone who doesn't think it has much meaning wouldn't like the show, though. There are definitely other works of a similar kind that I very much dislike, but personally I think Scum's Wish was done very well. Also the soundtrack was fantastic and the animation was pretty interesting too.

I think I watched an average of 6 show per season so far. No show that I actually took time to watch this year has been a disappointement. But if I had to choose the one show I watched that wasnt has good I as had hoped...probably Akiba's trip? It was still fun, but it did feel repetitive.

Nothing I watched has been bad though. I have a good eye for dodging those. Also it's been a pretty solid year. Lots of great stuff. I guess not everything being on the level of like MHA is disappointing? I'm hoping Black Clover and BBB & B will be the shows to do it.
