I started attending anime events about 2 years ago. Felt like I was going to a Halloween party on steroids without a costume. So, I decided to put a costume together but had a real hard time deciding on an anime character. I mean, almost all the characters are between 10 and 14. Don't see a lot of old people at the anime events, but some really good Gandalfs and DumbleDorfs could be found. I ended up with a samari costume because they are usually depicted as old and at least it has the anime theme. I do think I could pull off the principle on "To Love-Ru" if I had the right wig, but it is not my first choice. What do you guys do?

To me there is no age limit on cosplaying as any character. If you want to be a 64 year old Naruto, then so be it. Kids can cosplay as older characters then we can cosplay as younger characters. Or pick characters from older anime, like Captain Gloval from Robotech.

You could go as Kadota from Sakura Quest and do a double-cosplay with him in his Chupakabura costume.

That or the myriad butlers, martial artists, ninja, samurai, kings or retirement home residents.

Could go as Kami from DBZ. All you need is enough blood on hand for the perpetual nosebleeds when Android 18 hugs you endlessly.

Aha, so Hayao Miyazaki DOES like modern anime, after all!

First off I want to say I think it's awesome that you want to cosplay even if you're a little older than a lot of anime characters. And as someone said above I don't think there should be an age limit on what character you can cosplay. Just cosplay a character you love.
That said here's a few more suggestions for you of older anime characters.

Tomomi Masaoka from Psycho Pass
Watari from Death Note
Sugoroku Mutou (Yugi's grandfather) from Yu-gi-oh
Bookman from D Gray-man
Yakumo Yurakutei/ Kikuhiko from Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

I hope you're able to find a cosplay you'll enjoy.

Ok, now how am I now supposed to unsee that? At least people on the street are looking at him. I hit a rough crowd in DC. I was wearing the samari outfit, but I also had a giant fox tail, and a white wig with nekomimi ears hidden under it. I walk into the hotel starbucks and order coffee. No one looks at me and no one says a word, even though I am the only one in a cosplay get up. I mean, the ears are moving. That can't be something you see everyday. I then get on the metro to go to the convention center. Same thing. No one on the train looks at me or says a word. At local events, I often go into McDonalds. Same deal. I mean, how can you not at least ask "hey buddy, What's up?"
