Turn off your computer. Problem solved.

Cyber Bullying can be vastly different from trolling. There are Malicious Acts one can carry out that could be considered Cyber Bullying that simply turning your computer off wont fix.

A cyber bully could be someone who goes through and maliciously reports or flags videos on a specific Youtubers channel. Assuming the Youtuber relies on their channel for income this would be a troublesome situation for them to go through.

A cyber bully could have obtained personal information on another person and threaten to dox them. This could bring very personal and very real problems for the individual being doxed.

Blackmail is another thing that could be carried out over the internet.
Though generally just considered blackmail, one could call it Cyber Bullying if it is being done through the internet.

Think of malicious acts one could commit in combination of utility the internet brings,
and a direct focus on a single individual, and you have Cyber Bullying.

The issue of bullying is only a problem when you cannot resolve it by removing yourself from the situation or by pleading with the other party to leave you alone. But on the internet? You can log off the computer, you can avoid websites where there are individuals going after you, most sites allow you to ignore certain individuals so you don't have to see what they are saying towards you.

And when you go to school on Monday, those individuals are still there and everybody else knows what they said.

Teenagers and young adults have a HIGH crossover between their online and offline friends. Literally every friend my kids have on Facebook and every follower they have on Twitter is someone they know in real life and see on a regular basis. Even if they block the guy spreading the nasty rumour, they still have a lot of mutual friends who will see it, and not seeing it themselves doesn't help.

So you are right - it's only a problem "when you cannot resolve it by removing yourself from the situation or by pleading with the other party" - but that is quite frequently the case on the internet for younger people. My kids don't have a single Facebook friend or Twitter follower they don't see in real life on a regular basis, and that's unlikely to change for several years, simply because they won't have much opportunity to expand outside of that bubble.

Meanwhile, I have several thousand Facebook friends and I only know a few hundred of them. I don't encounter more than a dozen of them on a regular basis in real life. Even if some rogue dickhole decides he's going to trash my reputation, he probably doesn't reach more than a few of my friends, and I have that reputation for a reason - because I've acted consistently and reliably for years. If Joe Blow tries to say I do shit I don't do, most of my friends won't believe him.

Younger people have the opposite situation. If some random stranger starts a vicious rumour, it's really tempting to believe those when you're a kid. It's exciting and interesting when someone at your school is dealing drugs, so you'll probably throw pretty much anyone you know under the bus in exchange for that kind of excitement. Even if it's not true. Even if the stories don't add up. Even if you were hanging out together when the rumourmill claims your friend was selling crack to preschoolers behind the grocery store.

"I don't know man, Fred says he totally saw you."

"You were at my house when he says he saw me."

"Yeah, but still, man... why would he lie?"

Because people are fucking stupid. Young people doubly so.

I think some young children(preteens) to early teenagers don't really grasp the concept of ignoring things and not taking them literally. I don't think everyone really grasped the internet as well as they have now to really teach what to watch out for with the whole bullying thing, but I think it is a lot better now and easier to prevent. Most people who have teenagers at this point of life at least had the internet growing up at least, generally, unless they had children way later in life. There is no reason the parents can't teach the children how to be safe and to handle cyberbullying.

To be honest, if people are still being cyberbullied at this point, it's their own fault. There is no reason why they couldn't just ignore it. It's pretty basic computer knowledge at this point.

Lol at the people getting triggered because I asked "Is it real". I do appreciate those of you who have managed to look past a couple of words and have engaged in discourse that actually adds value to either side of the argument through logic, examples, and respect.

Thank you to those individuals. If I haven't replied to messages addressed at me I will when I get home.

nah since in reality the only people cyber bullying you are the ones bullying you in real life since you can block/mute anyone else and never deal with them again.

or just get off the internet and don't socialize with people? If you can't take criticism well you have a lot to worry about your future when you are out in the world working... but of course.. people who are don't cater to your whines are racists, sexist, bigot, -phobes. etc.. right ?

Cyberbullying is real because bullying itself is real. If there are many forms of bullying why can't cyberbullying be one of them?

Like in real life ignoring bullying doesn't always work some people just can't and even then it shouldn't be neccesary but people should ignore it if they can.

Turning your pc off or ignoring it just like in irl is just a way to ignore the problem and not fix it imo.

Cyber-bullying is 20 times different from physical bullying. No one can force you to read something you don't want, and if they are harassing you over the internet, it is 20 times easier to get them in trouble for it, whether through ban or harassment charges depending on where and what means the offense comes from, the seriousness of the offense, and the repetition of the offense.

Implying that ignoring the problem in this case isn't a fix. Kek. What are you going to do? You can't make someone stop being a piece of shit. You only give them power by giving in to their efforts. It only becomes an actual problem when the cyber-bullying starts affecting your real world livelihood and earnings. Cases such as slander, stream-sniping, DDoSing popular podcasts and other streams, and other things that limit or ruin the ability to produce content for those who utilize the internet as their main source of income.

I assume, in this case, we are not talking about those things and are more-so referring to when someone calls you a bad name over the internet. Who honestly gives a fuck?

Yes it is and no they aren't however when it comes to not being able to use a site again because of cyber bullying since those who bully create multiple accounts that's not fair or ok leaving the site never using it again is NOT an answer.

You can't make someone stop that's the problem that's why better reporting systems are needed but you can ban and IP and an account all you like but they can just use a new IP which is a problem the answer is a better way to ban someone for good but unluckily we can't do that so there is no answer.

You either let them win and leave the site and never use it again.
Or put up with it till it drives you insane and you burst and react again letting them win.

Either way you are fucked.
Also when someone calls you a bad name over the internet that's not bullying sure they are picking on you but that's no where near enough to constitute being cyber bullying.

I had a guy who stalked me on a site annoying me i blocked him like 20 times on 20 different accounts of his i went through this for a long time before the guy got bored and it wore my mental health down a ton the rumours spread the attacks that kind of shit is NOT ok nor is leaving a site you love because of a bully is an answer.

If Cyberbullying begins to impact your freedom (forcing you out of a site or game etc) and causes mental health problems and it's constant that is not ok and never should be joked about by "just turn off your computer" because sure you can but ignoring problems doesn't solve them.

You turn it off then next time you go on they are there the only answer is to quit and lose the game fall into their play and let them win.
Cyberbullying is never a joke and it's also bad when they start to contact your family and say shit about you to them and your friends trying to start real world damage.

Cyberbullying doesn't have to cause real world damage to be a problem and that people think that it does is just stupid but when i talk about cyberbullying i don't mean some mean man calling you names over a screen i mean stalking and harassing you online and maybe even on other sites and contacting your loved ones :P

Bullying doesn't have to be about income and your real life to be a problem just the fact you can get pushed off a place you love due to stalking and harrasement is enough to deem it a problem.

Though as i said right now there is no solution i don't think there ever will be sadly not without taking freedom of speech away from people which is actually the worst of the two evils.

Ignore multiple accounts, then.

Right. So the easiest and most stress-free way to fix the problem is, get this, to ignore it.

.. Why? Just ignore it. Okay. Snipping you until I get to the next point.

Aaaand ended up snipping everything.

1. Ignoring doesn't solve a problem it's simply avoiding it and not everyone can ignore things until i was 20 i couldn't at all so it's not really a good solution.

2 and 3 . Again ignoring it is not a good solution for everyone and is a copout way of just ignoring a real problem.

If your answer to bullying is to ignore it you obviously have never have had it impact you a ton online and offline some people aren't good at ignoring and just can't do it to say well if you don't have a thick skin don't use the internet etc is a solution then fine for you to believe that but i personally believe it's a copout and we should be looking for better solutions and punishments for bullies
