The season hasn't even started I know my favorites will be:
The Ancient Magus' Bride
Food Wars S3
Gintama
Dies Irae

I haven't been this excited or hyped since last Fall especially ever since Amazon snatched up the best shows in Spring and Summer.

Bumpity bump! I'll add mine later. I promise, but for now since the season is now underway I wanted to remind folks this was here.

Food Wars is already at the top of my list. I've no idea what first season show is likely to climb up to be loved by me. I've already got backlog, and guess I'll be spending the weekend catching up with first episodes.

3-gatsu no Lion: Thank God the season is not over! Final evaluation in three months. (9/10 so far...)
100% Pascal-sensei: Silly and weird at times, it had a certain Nickelodeon feel to it. Animation, characters and imagination were all good. Unrestrained fun. (5/10)
Anime Gataris: Full of material referencing popular anime moments, characters, settings and even industry knowledge, I wasn't quite sure if the intent of the show was to introduce anime through an uneducated newbie, or if it was a glossary for otakus. Either way, it struggled to find its groove. Then it turned even weirder with anime-morphing and attempted author message(s?). (5/10)
Black Clover: Asta will likely be memorable for years to come with that voice of his. As a whole, the series is above average – decent characters, good animation, traditional plot. The relaxed pacing is actually enjoyable. The "Petit Clover" segment at the end is cute, for the smiles. (7/10 so far...)
Blend S: The saucy staff at Café Stiles served up a full assortment of scintillating antics this season. Enjoyed the sticky situations and S-turn of events. I can imagine Maika ending it with "Turn this anime off. Never watch it again." ~glare~ Which only makes everyone want to watch more! (7/10)
Bonobono: Simply endearing. As always. (7/10)
Children of the Whales: The art style, world building, character development, music, story, animation – all of it is top notch. Even the 'ugly' scenes somehow achieve a certain transcendent beauty. Beautiful to watch, beautiful to ponder emotional connections and ramifications as the story sinks beneath the skin. Addictive enough I've rewatched already. JC Staff did an excellent job. (9/10)
Classicaloid 2: Another fun season full of composer antics. Really like the addition of VA Yoshitsugu Matsuoka with his character, Wagner. The story line is loose at the beginning, just like season 1 – it gains traction about episode 11 then builds through the second cour. The modernized compositions are worth the listen. (7/10)
Code:Realize: Adapted from a beautifully illustrated otome game, the anime kept the same stylish steampunk vibrancy with the same sweet voice actors. The pacing seemed a bit inconsistent, but still quite an entertaining and adventurous love story. Romantic to the end. Mia Regina's OP song "kalmia" is a keeper, too. (7/10)
Dies Irae: Mired in unintelligent confusion, this anime almost stumbled into the drop zone. (But if dropped, I couldn't honestly do a review.) In layman's terms, it sucks. Note to studio: Do not rely on viewers to research source material to understand your mess on the screen. And it's not done yet *cringe* (2/10 so far...)
Dream Festival R: For those of us who like guy idol shows and crave relationship drama, this anime served both well. Especially enjoyed Keigo x Yuto and Kurofune's music. Kanade's VA was endearing and made him all the more charming. And ending the season with a review of all the songs performed during the season was well played – reminded viewers of all the good times in a special music video program. It's unfortunate the CGI for the musical performances wasn't as good as it could have been. (7/10)
Dynamic Chord: Although some of its animation is inconsistent, it is nicely illustrated. Beautiful men, beautiful music. The reason I give it a lower score is the format: It would work better as a 12-minute short mixing music video and story. The current full-length episode format allows the invasion of too much dead space, lengthy flashbacks and loose writing. In other words, slow slow pacing. The background elevator music was annoying; that choice felt cheap like the budget couldn't support anything better. But the bands — apple-polisher, Liar-S, KYOHSO and [rêve parfait] — were the real stars, as they should be. (5/10 overall, but 8/10 for the music)
Fate/Apocrypha: Fantastic fighting by some sexy servants with sexy voices, but second-rate writing and terribly inconsistent animation. Enjoyed shipping Astolpho and Sieg. (5/10)
Fireball Humorous: Cute, funny short. (5/10)
Fox Spirit Matchmaker: The second cour turned the series around. Humor blended with romantic drama in a supernatural setting had all the ingredients for a delightful treat. Please continue with the Japanese adaptation! (8/10)
Garo: Vanishing Line: Exciting and fun with intense moments, I really enjoy what director Park Sunghoo did with this production. The choreography and camera angles are well done. The animation has those sparkly moments that makes me want to capture them all. It took a while to achieve some character depth, but it was worth the wait. (8/10 so far...)
Girls' Last Tour: First off, kudos to Jin Aketagawa, the Sound Director for this anime – the setting and story structure relied heavily on sound to capture and emphasize the world of Yuu and Chi-chan. Excellent job. For the story, the girls' lonely journey through a mysterious city while uncovering clues that caused its desolation was like pinpoints of sadness in a bigger picture. The positive dispositions of Yuu and Chi-chan kept the tone lighter than the atmosphere. I really enjoyed watching these two friends. (8/10)
Himouto! Umaru-chan R: Cute SOL. The humor has its moments, just not enough to lift it higher. Didn't find myself smiling often. (5/10)
Houseki no Kuni: To capture the unique brilliancy of this anime, the use of CG was the logical application. It's beautiful from start to end. Smooth transitions and dramatic cinematography made me think I'd never been so excited peeking up through blades of grass before. From the airborne scenes to those under water it was all very well done. The use of colors alone could generate volumes of analysis: simply, it dazzled. As for the MC, Phos certainly crystallized (lol) throughout the season. The story is still quite the mystery, though, which lends well to future adaptations. (8/10)
Imouto sae Ireba Ii: Like walking into a foul-mouthed smack-down discussion between friends, the tone was a bit different than expected. First impressions gradually gave way to understanding then accepting the characters' relationships and that the 'imouto' premise wasn't meant as something tangible: The MC was writing the story he wanted; it was his "stamp" of approval. Enjoyed it much more than anticipated. (7/10)
Infini-T Force: A 3DCG super sentai series that delivers exciting fighting scenes. The character animation feels plastic, but the action is where it's at. The story is OK. Many characters are borrowed from other series and are complete walking in. Enjoyed Damian Gray and VA Daisuke Hirakawa – just fun. If not for Kazuya Nakai's roll as Zapp Renfro, Hirakawa would've been my selection for Best Male VA. Already waiting for the next battle... (7/10)
Inuyashiki: Brutal anime. Not as in poorly done, but the seesaw effect of good vs bad. The animation was decent, the characters believable, music great. The merit is in the content: Harsh inhumane catastrophe that doesn't know when to stop versus the greater ability to love and to teach love. Bittersweet throughout. (8/10)
Just Because!: Home runs have new affectionate meaning in this romantic anime; makes me root for the home team. Slowly developed, the story had multiple possible – and believable – endings which created good tension. Although, waiting for the scoreboard change got me anxious (still waiting...). The animation was a little choppy at times, which was distracting. Overall, an enjoyable romance. (7/10)
Juuni Taisen: What started out as a great series ended up falling into a déjà-vu trap, not just for the end game but for the viewers who are somewhat familiar with Buddha's zodiac party. Would've loved a greater degree of mystery, battle strategy and suspense. The OP is still my favorite song of the year, though. (5/10)
Kekkai Sensen & Beyond: As crazy as it gets, the highly diverse Libra team was over-the-top fun each and every week. Missions with purpose, missions without purpose, larger than life personalities and budgeted hospital expenses – the organization came together and really dazzled. The music, directing, cinematography, choreography and colorful, splashy animation: Thank you Bones for pulling together an awesome crew to bring us "& Beyond". Now it needs another season! (9/10)
Kino's Journey: Heavy on ideology, Kino experiences the wide spectrum of what humanity has to offer – sometimes beautiful, sometimes harsh, simple and/or complex – through a journey both physical and spiritual. The anime is not a light SOL. The depths of issues were presented in situ, which allowed viewers to contemplate with open minds. (7/10)
Konohana Kitan: A beautiful world beautifully illustrated, the hard-working attendants of Konohanatei make each episode special with lots of feels. The stories were entertaining and at times introspective. I appreciate all the care put into this anime. (8/10)
Love Kome: We Love Rice 2nd Season: Strains of rice personified as student idols. Weird, but instructional. Amusing story about the carbs we love. (4/10)
Love Live! Sunshine!! 2nd Season: More SOL than idol show, the girls of Aqours were fun to watch. Although the music was unremarkable, the story carried the anime. (7/10)
Mahoujin Guru Guru: On a magical journey of discovery, self-discovery and becoming mage and hero, Kukuri and Nike were the dynamic duo charging through a crazy, imaginative world full of twists, surprises and traps laid by villainous Raid. Well written and well animated in a fun, cheerful style, Production I.G did a great job. Sequel! Yeah! (Raid's heartache was just too heavy to end on that note.) (8/10)
Monster Strike: The Fading Cosmos: An improvement in every way over season 2. However, the tone became much darker. I miss the days of season 1 when Ren occasionally spoke to the viewers out of character – that was part of his charm.
EDIT Jan 6: Last episode just aired; I was called out on Ren. With a three-year time skip and a good deal of character growth, the ending not only left the door open (literally) for another arc, but also hit the feels. Would really like to see that growth pursued further. (6/10)
Neo Yokio: Western anime parody. The witty writing had me rolling at times. Enjoyed the characters and creative setting; however, the plot felt thin. Would definitely like to see more. (7/10)
Net-juu no Susume: Very relatable, this love story speaks to the hearts of many viewers. A sweet romance within a romance that had a history, and multiple personas – and awkward! It's nicely written, fun and heart-warming. Completely enjoyed it. (8/10)
Omiai Aite wa Oshiego, Tsuyok na, Mondaiji: Cheap fling that doesn't even tease well. (3/10)
Onyankopon: CGI short about mythical creatures and girls' high school life with weekly dance routines. Animation seems like it was done by staff seeking to gain experience in the field. Watched just for the catchy ED each week. (3/10)
Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara: A charming, romantic short about a professional woman, her caring husband and his cocktails of love. Every week I looked forward to drinking up this sweet SOL and even tested out a few recipes and antics, lol. (7/10)
Our love has always been 10 centimeters apart: Romance with an emotional twist tossed into the middle kept the viewer orbiting those 10cm along with the MCs. In just six episodes, this love story was written to create a good deal of investment in the characters. Quite fulfilling. (8/10)
Ousama Game: As a death royale anime, the method of death should vary a little more. Hangings, limbs popping off, blood vessels suddenly exploding... If future writers are stuck like this, CR user suggestions in the "The Death Alphabet" game thread may help with creativity. Overall a basement anime (B-rated, but not hated). (3/10)
Pikotarou Lullaby La La By: Would classify this as adult humor. And a bit twisted at that. Enjoyed it. (5/10)
Pingu in the City: With preschoolers as the intended audience (airs weekday morning), this show is warm and fuzzy in a 3DCGI realm. Pingu's capers are funny and cute – I can see how he'd be loved by kids and parents alike. Noot! (6/10)
Quanzhi Fashi season 2: What happened!?! Season 1 was so much better than this. Two episodes to lay the foundation, nine episodes of mobilization and blood bath, then big boss battle to conclude it. But wait, the battle never finished – who won? Really, the budget ran out?! Have to read the novel for the results? *grgrgr* Combined with zippo character growth, this anime ranked bottom of the barrel. And there's a promised third season... (2/10)
Rainy Cocoa: Ame-Con!!: The next installment short full of cute guys seeking business success in Hawaii – I'm on board with that. Better than last year's series. (5/10)
Robomasters The Animated Series: Nice college story of robotics teams and competition. Selection of voice actors was great. A lot more tech talk than team building, though. Decent show. (6/10)
Sengoku Night Blood: Adapted otome eye candy replete with fluffy tails, fluffy ears, vampire fangs and bare chests. Story be damned, this an appropriate anime for the rose-colored glasses. The different EDs were a nice touch; especially liked (very much liked) the song from ED 6. Some episodes had some really 'wow' use of coloring, such as the meeting in ep 10. (6/10)
Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara: The next adaptation of a manga I absolutely adore(!!), 3rd Plate captures well the excitement, details and drama the students of Totsuki Academy face. As always, these highly passionate students are a joy to watch and an inspiration to my kitchen. (8/10)
Shoukoku no Altair: A definite favorite for the past two seasons. Intelligent, well-written, beautifully illustrated with colorful and passionate characters. This anime does not "dumb down" for its viewers, which is much appreciated. A downloadable world map would've been helpful, though. I now look forward to delving into the manga. (8/10)
Taishou Chicchai-san: Shounen-ai that really wasn't. *tch* Cute nonetheless. (5/10)
The Ancient Magus' Bride: Beautiful adaptation. So glad the mystical experience hasn't yet ended. (9/10 so far...)
The IDOLMaSTER: Cinderella Girls: The perfect weekly dose of cute idols doing cute things. Like toppings on parfaits. "Akimeite Ding Dong Dang" was a really catchy ED. (6/10)
The [email protected]: Side M: The backstories of the idols are quite interesting and deliver solid personalities. Corraling those personalities into units is challenging, thus a basis for some good drama. With only 13 episodes and the lengthy intros, an engrossing plot still managed to develop with the main unit, Dramatic Stars. However, the songs are basic as if that isn't the emphasis of the anime. (7/10)
Time Bokan: The Villains' Strike Back: The change in premise from season 1 to 2 works better. Instead of altering history into something silly, it's now full of trivia. Still silly fun. The villains are center stage this time with Bimajo and boys. ED is cute too. Guessing this anime will run until BNHA returns to the air and bumps it again. (6/10)
TsukiPro: Charming male idols having fun at work. What could be better? Their challenges, goals and determination felt meaningful, which means the writing supported the characters well. Idol CGI performances have improved over the seasons, but still lack a vibrancy that's hard to capture. Love the units – Quell, SolidS, Soara, Growth. The music actually pushes the anime to a higher plateau. (7/10)
Two Car: Girl drama to the power of seven gave me a stomach ache. The sport sounded interesting, but introducing it through seven personality-diverse teams was a bit much. I made it across the finish line with this anime. *whew* (3/10)
UQ Holder: Having read some of the manga before the season, it was sort of disappointing how the adaptation chopped so much of the story. One theme I was hoping would be highlighted more was the loneliness of immortality. Fun fights, but it didn't amount to much more than that. (5/10)
Wake Up, Girls! New Chapter: Bland. A case of anime identity crisis, but provides no compelling reason to care. The next generation has been introduced for another 10 years of 'idol drama'. Best part? The toast in the OP!! (4/10)
Welcome to the Ballroom: Production I.G did a nice job with this sports anime. It captured the high and low of competition drama with a good balance of character appeal. Enjoyed learning about ballroom dancing. (6/10)
Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou: After a few episodes, this anime showed a lot of promise. The VAs are great, the animation is good, the sound/music is clean and well done. Hints of a relationship between Inaba and Hase got the better of me so I delved into the manga. However, the preachy overtones became a bit annoying so I ended up liking the anime a little less by the end. (7/10)
Yuuki Yuna Additional Chapters: Over-the-top drama, crying, screeching like banshees – quite an annoying type of delivery. Worse than Asta in Black Clover. The premise is nice, though, as is the pretty and colorful supernatural world. (5/10)

MALE IDOL SUMMARY.. ♪..♫.. ♪♪.. ♫..♪.. ♫.. ♪♪.. ♫.. ♪.. ♫.. ♪♪...
Dream Festival R ▬▬▬▬▬▬
Dear Dream, Kurofune

Good songs, voices and spirit of the music. Kurofune is a knotch above Dear Dream, but both are enjoyable. The CGI performances in the anime are a little rough to watch, but the show was well-written. Enjoyed the relationship building most.

(7/10 both anime and music)

Idolmaster Side M ▬▬▬▬▬▬
Dramatic Stars, Beit, High Joker, S.E.M, Jupiter, W etc.

While the anime may be good, the music is basic and sing-songy. Nothing particularly catchy or refreshing. Best to watch for the story.

(8/10 for the anime, 5/10 for the music)

Tsukipro ▬▬▬▬▬▬
SolidS, Quell, Soara, Growth

The music is refined with variations in tone from one title to the next. Each unit feels unique. CDs are worth the purchase. The CGI performances are smooth yet still have the odd plasticity. The music makes up for it.

(7/10 for the anime, 8/10 for the music)

Dynamic Chord ▬▬▬▬▬▬
apple-polisher, Liar-S, rêve parfait, Kyohso

Polished and well-rounded. Definitely bands worth investment. Apple-polisher impresses me most. Totally unfortunate the anime does not give these guys justice.

(4/10 for the anime, 8/10 for the music)

Idolish7 ▬▬▬▬▬▬
Idolish7, ReVale, Zool and Trigger

Just two episodes released, but Idolish7 as a unit sounds good so far. However, although the music is done well, it feels a little basic [based on titles already released].

(7/10 – largely because the anime is an unknown)

Personal favorites for this season:

The Ancient Magus' Bride (already becoming my anime of the decade)
Kino's Journey - The Beautiful World
Konohana Kitan
Twocar
Fox Spirit Matchmaker
Code: Realize - Guardian of Rebirth

And that's really about all I'm interested in. Of the rest of the crowd, nothing really stands up and says, "Watch me!" And of the six I've listed, only two are constantly screaming in my ear, namely "The Ancient Magus' Bride" and "Kino's Journey". Now, I'll admit that the other four are interesting in their own ways, but they're on a hill while the first two are busily climbing up Mt. Everest.

Closing in on the end of the season and things have definitely shaken out a little bit. I've dropped more shows than I usually do just because a vacation mid season meant I was going to be falling behind on almost everything. I had to play catch up instead of just riding the week to week inertia which presented a little bit of a higher bar. A little movement in the upper tiers as well and a few shows I still have to catch up on that just weren't at the top of my list to begin with.

Top Tier
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau (Children of the Whale)
Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
MMO Junkie

Must Watches
Konohana Kitan
Just because
Girls Last Tour

Watching
Love Live Sunshine S2
Magus Bride
Blend S
Anime Gataris
March Comes In Like A Lion

On The Bubble
Himouto! Umaru-chan S2

Dropped for lack of interest
Black Clover
Garo Vanishing Line
Sister's All You Need
Wake Up Girls Shin Shou
Osake wa Fuufu
Urahara
Kino no Tabi
Juuni Taisen
Inuyashiki

Dropped for lack of quality
Ousama Game (though I'm still going to keep tabs on it because it's almost in so bad it's good territory)
Dies Irae
Omiai Aite wa Oshiego na, Mondaiji
Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-bitch na Ken
Two car

I'll evaluate how good shows are during my usual midseason evaluation, but for now I'll just put stuff in general tiers.

Masterpiece Potential
The Ancient Magus' Bride
Food Wars! The Third Plate
March Comes in Like a Lion season 2

Great Stuff
Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond
Children of the Whales (probably going to hold off until Netflix puts it up)
Inuyashiki
Kino's Journey
Yuki Yuna is a Hero

Enjoyable Stuff
Blend S
Code:Realize
Girls' Last Tour
Himouto! Umaru-chan R
The [email protected]: Cinderella Girls Theater 2nd Season
Love is Like a Cocktail
UQ Holder!

On the Fence
Anime-gataris
The [email protected]: Side M
Just Because!
Konohana Kitan
My Girlfriend is Shobitch
Onyankapon
Recovery of an MMO Junkie

In Serious Danger
A Sister's All You Need
Dies Irae
Garo: Vanishing Line
Infini-T Force
Juni Taisen
King's Game
Land of the Lustrous
Two Car

Dropped
Black Clover
Dynamic Chord
Evil or Live
Sengoku Night Blood
Tsukipro
Urahara

At this point, many shows will start to hit the drop zone as I generally have a four-episode rule, but I generally give all shows three episodes before deciding if it is worthy of the cut or not.

Beginning of seasons are always so exciting! Picked up a bunch of shows, and I feel like I'll be sticking with most of them. Fully expect to see a lot of shake up throughout the season. Though March Comes in Like a Lion and Gintama are among my all-time favorites. If either of those two manage to get displaced (even temporarily) from Top 2, I'll be mightily impressed.

I have dropped quite a bit this season. By the third week I have my list of shows I feel are worthwhile, and a second list of shows I won't watch again. On the dropped side:

Black Clover
Juni Taisen: Zodiac War
Evil or Live
Urahara
Tsukipro The Animation
King's Game
Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Dies Irae
Garo -Vanishing Line-
Blend-S
Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond
Anime-Gataris
A Sister's All You Need

You'll notice that's a fairly good chunk of the current anime Crunchyroll shows. And how particular I am towards anime in general.
