This one feels more obvious than others, No Game No Life. Just read the books. I have no idea how to describe it.

Probably didn't do as good as we thought. I'm speaking of anime shows that didn't get a second season in general.

The majority of them that are based on light novels...and the reason is the production companies want you to get hooked on the stories snd have to go buy the light novels to get closure

The Kadokawa harem formula, basically select one good manga light novel, adapt 2 seasons 2 ovas and 1 movie and that's it.

- Pretty much everything
- They just ran out of story, it wasn't popular enough, etc.

How many anime actually get sequels? Less than 40%, right?

Prison High School. There is plenty of material, it was highly received, its been long enough, no idea why. My guess would be that its too lewd but that didn't stop Season 1 so

All anime.

Production committee working with publisher of manga/light novel hire animation studio to produce a limited run series to boost merch sales and books sales with the added bonus of dvd profits. While the animation studio gets to work their buts off.

If series goes beyond expected sales and popularity by large margin it continues. Sometimes with a different anime studio because the previous animation group had to move onto another project in a jam packed schedule that they must maintain to keep themselves operating.

Or they stick with the original anime studio and have to wait years and years and years for them to have the time to continue.

And it will remain this way until something shakes up how anime is made.

When I read this thread's title, I was expecting kooky conspiracy theories, but everyone seems to be posting pretty legit answers...

Oh well, that's never stopped me before!

No Game No Life: World governments banned the production of a second season, as they believe the show promotes the gambling of human lives.

Black Bullet: After protests by PETA, who claimed that "Gastrea lives matter, too!", the show was forced into cancellation.

World Conquest Zvezda Plot: The group known as Zvezda failed in it's attempts to conquer any country besides Japan, and refuses to air the second season out of sheer embarrassment.

Well, we know why Dragon Half never got out of OVA status, when the manga artist briefly did prison time. By the time he got out, further ships would have already sailed.

As for Outbreak Company, there is no hope--NO HOPE--of a positive pro-otaku comedy ever succeeding in Japan, where they are blamed for all the country's social and economic woes.
Even our manga/anime-loving hero was forced to do a 180 and parade the "Happy work-shunning socially-rejected speed-bump" NEET stereotype, just to avoid any suspicions of the show being "subversive"...Imagine doing a happy Muslim sitcom in Trump's America.

An old discussion of that:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-796191/the-current-list-of-greenlit-anime?pg=35#46104099

Based on those statistics, at the time it looked more like 24% overall.

That post was only one cour into 2014, and covering 2010-2012 series, however, so it would have no doubt missed some sequels of series later in 2012. Still, I'm betting the final result would not have improved by more than 2-3 points.

That gets me thinking. Would a US studio ever pick up the rights to animate a Light Novel or Manga?

We have Netflix making a live action Death Note.

Edge of Tomorrow is based off of a Japanese Light Novel and Manga series.

I am sure there are more examples.

Of course a lot of US animation is still outsourced overseas, but if an American company wanted to open up an overseas animation studio specifically to produce anime for them, they could pump out multiple seasons of shows that become popular.

Conversely, would a Japanese studio ever pick up a Western produced IP to turn into an anime? I know there have been a few Marvel and DC franchises with short run anime.

I think the RA Salvatore Forgotten Realms series would make a terrific anime.

Blade Runner as well

Made me smile; I just watched that last week. It's too bad though, I really wanted to see the invasion of the States.

Chivalry of a failed knight, ended right as the first arc was over, and that first season built heavily for more, as the light novels kept going.

it's only 2 years old though, so there is atleast some hope for more eventually, i mean berserk got a sequel over a decade later :p

Hope the light novel get's an official release westward atleast :-/
