What happened to all the Fullmetal Alchemists and Stein's Gate's

Why does so much of the industry seem to pander to children? The few adult shows that are around are broody and unappetizing (mushi-shi, Beserk)

because they dont make enough money.

Sad truth. Can you handle it?

Children can get money from parents, because then it can take the job of being actual parents to children so they can just give in to the mindless and endless profit.

Again, can you handle the truth?

We need to have people give at least 10 years to something in terms of profit, and then when they grow older they can move on to something else. Like micro transactions and AMAZON

World gets pretty fucking boring once you find out what they want from you.

Could you perhaps define "adult show", because I think there are a solid number of shows which contain "adults" in their target audience? Are they all as good as Steins;gate or FMA? Of course not. Those are two of the greatest shows of all time, but there are still a lot of good shows which I would consider "adult".

Obvious bait.

But for that 1% chance that the OP isn't joking, FMA:B aired in the same season as shows like K-On!, Haruhi Suzumiya, Dragon Ball Kai, Pandora Hearts, Eden of the East, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, and a bunch of other shows most people have never heard of. Of these shows, only 2 of them were targeted towards an older audience. Steins;Gate aired alongside Blue Exorcist, AnoHana, Deadman Wonderland, Nichijou, The World God Only Knows, Gintama, Tiger & Bunny, etc. Deadman Wonderland was the only notable series that's rated for adults and that's only because of the violence and gore. Most anime will be aimed at teenagers or kids. It's always been like that, it's like that now, and it'll be always be that way. You're just selectively ignoring all the modern anime aimed at adults and all the older anime aimed at kids. There's not much difference between today's anime and the anime from a decade ago other than the quantity of anime being produced.

If you want recent anime for an older audience or at least on the level of maturity as FMA:B and Steins;Gate (which isn't that high of a bar in my opinion), there's Kakegurui, Made in Abyss, Monogatari, Fate/Apocrypha, and Rage of Bahamut that all aired this season, some of them still airing.

Stop it. You have:

Legend of The Galactic Heroes.

Monster

Evangelion

Fate/Zero

Serial Experiments Lain

Perfect Blue

Ergo Proxy

Golden Boy

Hellsing

Baccano

Lupin III

Paprika

And on and on and on. There is so much "adult" material to engage yourself with. You just need to find it. PhantomGundam already said it but there has always been kids shows. Anime as a medium is geared towards kids and teens. Adult shows aren't the main focus because they usually can't sell toys and figurines and shit. (Unless you're Evangelion lol.)

It would be neat if there were statistics on anime watchers, such as age, nationality, gender, etc. I think I remember seeing articles of such in this site's news section. Unfortunately, none are coming up when I do a quick search.

Assuming that most anime watchers are teens, I guess anime creators think that teens could most relate to teenagers. Though, even while I was a teen, I rarely related to teenagers in anime. That could be due to the extraordinary anime circumstances, societal differences, or a mixture of both. Ultimately, it doesn't bother me that anime has such a large focus on youth. Most of the other media that I consume are focused on adults. In that sense, anime gives me something different.

Well, FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a well written shounen series, aimed at a general age demographic. Just saying.

Perhaps your perspective is just plain wrong. For example many people don't consider FMA as adult at all. You likely have a checklist of things you see as "adult" However just because a certain show doesn't have the said checklist, doesn't mean it wasn't intended for mostly adults. Even shows that look very childish can be very popular among adults. Instead of saying the said anime isn't in your demographic why don't you just say it wasn't for you? Perhaps you need to broaden your view?

I would say most of the time anime is in the teen/young adult range, they sort of bundle the two together.
