Indeed, as the others have said above, both of those shows are targeted at teenagers...
Or rather, they're more "all audiences"?

A lot of the shows considered adult are brooding and dark, because it can only target adults. These themes are often too heavy or early for kids to understand, so it can't go backwards. Shows for teenagers can go forwards though. Adults can relate to works for younger audiences.

So in a roundabout way, an adult can enjoy a PG13 movie, but a 12 year old should probably not be watching R rated movies. You seem to think FMA is an R rated movie. It is not.

Don't look for grown-up shows, look for grown-up ways of appreciating kids' shows.

Especially when you're watching cartoons.

And on and on and on. There is so much "adult" material to engage yourself with. You just need to find it. PhantomGundam already said it but there has always been kids shows. Anime as a medium is geared towards kids and teens. Adult shows aren't the main focus because they usually can't sell toys and figurines and shit. (Unless you're Evangelion lol.)

To be fair to be OP its rough if it's a case of "you just have to find it". Seinen anime as a whole is getting niche and that's a sad state of affairs, there's some great manga out there but it's not being made by studios. Ultimately they don't get traction with newer fans though as they by nature can be brutal to watch from Berserk to even a Scums Wish theres none of the light headed fun majority of anime has. Then there's censorship... Teen chug bait gets censored never mind shows which can feature key adult plot scenarios like rape or a cold blooded murder.

Maybe Netflix will save the day lol - I grew up yearning for a Vagrant anime, on Netflix a revisit of say Claymore or Gantz would likely fit in well on there (they licensed the CGI Gantz movie funny enough).

Don't know where OP got FMA being aimed at adults from. It's intended for the 12-16 demographic. As for shows actually aimed at adults they tend to just not do very well in general. Most people in Japan, move away from anime into adulthood becoming concerned with work and relationships instead of checking out anime shows. A lot of adult orientated stuff is on at awkward hours like 2am in Japan so very few people watch it though some do record it the BD and DVD sales are generally poor as they reach only a niche audience. The only ones that do generally okay are those with bigger names like the Evangelion rebuild movies and Trigger shows because they can pump out merchandise.

FMA and others are more geared towards teens and older teens, if you want adult then try to visit the adult section, mature on the other hand, there's Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte -the maxim-, Attack on Titan... even though it's on adult swim, that doesn't make it kid friendly. it even has a higher rating from 14 to Mature.... so, mature is a matter and difference of opinion. after all, even Little Witch Academia, even for the younger audience, it has mature settings. my hero academia, even though geared towards a younger audience, still has mature nature/material. so, there are plenty, just got to start looking.

There's actually a lot of them, Crunchyroll just doesn't carry a ton of the more adult stuff. Funimation and Sentai Filmworks are big competitors and have the rights to a lot more adult series.

Also, the reason the majority of anime made seems to pander to children and teens is because it does. Not surprisingly there is a lot more money to be made remaking a popular shonen manga into an anime than taking a risk and creating an entirely new concept, one that may be censored over television broadcast or shoved into a late-night slot because it's too adult to show when the kiddies are still up.

I guess, but one could make a trip to reddit asking people what some great "adult" shows are. Or, just do a quick google search. Researching for 5 minutes will yield great results. It is sad Seinen is niche, but I'm still wafting through the shows that have already aired ages ago, and I always have anime to watch. Then again, I know my titles fairly well, and I'm aware of a lot of the stuff I'm gonna watch later on.

Edit: I want a Vagabond & Vinland Saga anime adaptation BADLY. I haven't read either but god do they sound up my alley. And it cannot be CGI for the love of God.

There is.

You just have to dig deeper than mainstream anime.

I'm also pretty sure people screaming for the lack of adult shows don't even know shows like Poco's udon world are aimed at a mature audience.

Blood and violence isn't everything folks.

True. I bet even most people who watched something as cute and innocent as Sweetness & Lightning don't know that it was adapted from a seinen manga.

To be honest, I got through most of the mainstream adult anime. To cope with it, it's much easier to start reading manga. You really never run out of stuff there.

It is? That is weird. I'd figure it'd be a josei manga or adult male manga (not sure of the name for those). I wonder how they figured it was for the seinan age group unless it is solely based on Kotori Iida and her friends.

That would be seinen. Well, young adult males anyway.
