I want to hear other people's stories of how they got into anime, for me personally i bought into the stigma of anime and hated it without giving it a chance until i was about 17, during my year 11 end of year exams i was looking for a reason to procrastinate but had finished all the tv shows i was into at the time and for some reason i decided to start Naruto from episode 1. (i'd seen bits and pieces on morning cartoon shows as a kid but had never followed the story) i binged the hell out of it, then slowly and very cautiously began to watch other anime like one piece etc. until one day i realised id fallen in love with the Japanese culture, the anime community and most of all the expressiveness of the Japanese language and skill of the voice actors. I also only watched dubs until i caught up with the english Naruto and couldn't wait, so i cringed through the first few episodes till i got used to, it now i could never go back!

Mom was a huge comic book nerd. Anime came with that.

It's just always been a thing for me.

For me it started from manga when my half little sister's half big sister came over from pretty far, so she stayed over some time and she is almost the same age as me I was 9 or 10 and she was a year younger than me. we went shopping and she didn't have much money and there was Shugo Chara vol. 5 and she wanted that so much so I bought that to her and we planned to read like 4 pages every day but when she went to sleep I read the whole book because I thought it was interesting and I read it again and again. then I went to library and there were more manga and I think I read all manga that was in there. I only watched some anime that are in Finnish or that has Finnish subs are there aren't much anime in Finnish so I got into anime later when I was better at English around the age 13 hehe. sorry for my bad English.

That's okay your english is pretty good, i think it's impressive to be able to speak multiple languages, that's interesting too i wonder if more people started from manga or anime.

Same as op for the most part. Shit on anime for the longest time for no real reason, then one day got bored on YouTube and came across an amv of FLCL and I remembered it from adult swim when I was little. I went crazy looking for the actual show and then I watched it and got hooked on anime.

The earliest memory I have is watching Silver-Fang on TV when I was young, back in the '90s.
But it was Truly first around '02-'03 where I got a couple of new friends that was really into Dragonball Z, which I must admit I started downloading the shit out of it, which also meant that I started with the Ginyu Saga because that finished first.
Because I'm from Denmark and at the time Anime wasn't really that popular here in the early '00s, but was gaining traction, which meant that around mid '00s I could finally start to buy some Anime. Have been an avid watcher ever since.

Would you say anime, and it's community/culture has changed much over the years? i've only been involved in the community recently so i don't really have any reference.

Really by just watching it and finding it interesting. I watched some anime like Voltron when I was a kid, but didn't understand the concept of anime. As far as I knew, it was just as American as G.I. Joe and Transformers.

In the late 90s I started hearing kids talking about Pokemon and Yugi-Oh, and had no idea what they were talking about. When the first Pokemon movie came out, I thought it looked childish, but still didn't really have a concept of what anime was. Then Toonami on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim to a lesser degree started showing stuff like Dragon Ball Z, Tenchi Muyo and YuYu Hakusho. I thought they were fun shows, so I watched them just about every day. I watched just about all the anime that Toonami and Adult Swim showed. When Naruto and Bleach started showing on Toonami, I even started signing up on message boards to discuss them. One day I found the Funimation Channel and really got hooked. I DVRed just about every show on the Funimation Channel, until the day FiOS dropped it.

So basically, I got into anime as a happy accident.

My first exposure to animation would be the Ghibli films. Those movies were targeted as family movies usually. My mother bought Spirited Away and we watched as a family. I loved it but I had no idea anime was really a genre of show. I got into anime sort of on accident. I woke up early one time around 4 am when I was 10 and turned on the TV. It was Sunday morning and I wanted to watch some Cartoon Network. Well sure enough, Cartoon Network was not on but Toonami instead. It was Ghost in the Shell and Inu Yasha that I stumbled upon and I really enjoyed them. That was about the extent of anime until middle school when my family bought the Netflix streaming service. I would say this is when I just started binging shows that intrigued me. It just kinda developed into being apart of my rotation of types of shows that I watch.
