As of this posting 50 are confirmed dead and over 200 wounded when a lone gunman opened fire upon a live concert from the 32nd floor of a hotel. At this time police believe it was a lone gunman, Stephen Paddock, who was killed by police when they stormed his apartment. Paddock's roommate has been named a person of interest but not named as a suspect at this time.

I realize this is likely to descend into yet another gun debate, but please keep this thread respectful towards your fellow forum-goers and to the victims of this horrific tragedy.

I believe this is as straight-forward as I can get, too.
I really do hope this does not become a whole debate about gun control and the likes.
There are times and places for such things and this does not seem to be the best combination of the two (in my own opinion).

No matter the machinery that was used in this horrific situation, it's depressing when someone is that bent on harming another human.
I believe the average of victims in previous shootings averaged to around four people per shooting (in the last fifty or so years).
Looking at statistics for 2015, it appeared that only 39 deaths were from mass shootings on this scale.
Imagine that, though.
One shooter taking out fifty people, greater than the overall deaths in the year where the most amount of mass shootings occurred.

May their families have time to grieve before some of the media storms approach them.
As well as those who survived the shooting to be given time to put things into perspective and defuse from the horrific experience they've gone through.

This stuff really bugs me. The offender in this case once again like so many shooters took the cowards route. He was upset about something probably stupid and went into a highly density populated area that probably didn't allow weapons and commenced a one sided slaughter. Kinda makes you wonder how lax security is when a guy can make it into a concert with a host of "rifles" and nobody noticed until it was too late. It is regrettable but I would bet whomever was in charge of security and monitoring is probably looking for a new job right now. It seems so unfair that such a large crowd of people, likely of varying backgrounds and beliefs were senselessly targeted.

As far as the gun debate the OP mentioned.. its likely this guy wasn't supposed to have guns in the first place or recently suffered mental illness and the system failed him. Tighter security and possibly armed security members should be considered to deter such horrific actions. I am sure situations like this will trigger people who hate gun laws. However I would like to remind everyone gun laws are not obeyed by criminals. This could easily have happened anywhere in the world however maybe the weapon would have been a car/bomb/ or machete. I hope the accomplices serve life without parole in the most horrific prison we can find.

EDIT
“They were well-trained,” Iannarelli said, noting the use of automatic weapons
looks like they had machine guns as "automatic" means once you depress the trigger the gun keeps firing until you let go.

Yes he was not technically at the concert he was on the 32nd floor of mandalay bay hotel next to the concert(south point hotel)... which you would think would have tighter security with large event happening next door.

That's horrible. I don't understand why anyone does that kind of thing- what reason, personal or ideological, possibly justifies killing dozens of people you know nothing about?

That's usually not the case. It was just a concert. Hotels don't check the luggage of their guests just because theirs a normal concert next to the hotel.

I think the route would be tighter security measures, as well as a more comprehensive mental healthcare system to be more freely available. I do not think anyone opposes officers being armed.

In terms of gun violence, it is a bit of an outlier, more perpetuated by mental illness and acts of domestic terrorism, than a dispute between irate individuals and gang violence.

From what I think I have read. I could be wrong.

That's horrible. Got some real nutjobs out there. I wonder what he posted on twitter right before doing this, they all seem to lately.

Before people turn this into a gun contol debate: He used a fully auto that is already illegal. Laws would not have stopped this.

I was just reading that it's legal to own a fully auto in Nevada provided it was purchased pre-1986 - I'm a bit fuzzy on that last detail since private sales are legal in Nevada so maybe I should say it's illegal for gun shops to sell full auto post-1986?

I'm happy to stay away from the gun control debate in general but if the site I was looking at is correct then that seems like a gaping flaw in Nevada's implementation of this area of gun control unless as you rightly pointed out he got it illegally.

Either way it's a shitty situation that has little to do with anything other than the fact that garbage people will do garbage things regardless of whether it's with a gun, truck or any other thing these wack jobs think to use to hurt innocent people.

Its up to 400 injured now. =/

Nothing has surfaced on the guy yet. He doesn't have a previous record and he didn't post any manifesto screeds or anything on social media that anyone has found. He seems to be just some random rich 60 something baby boomer. Hopefully his roommate / girlfriend sheds some light on this.
