God, just reading ya'lls synopsis', this anime is a train wreck and an insult to the manga. Ruined Shinobu, omitted Santa, and got rid of the training arc (which had a ton of development between eva and touta). Sounds like blasphemy to me.

Hiya all, i was just curious which original negima series to watch before i watch UQ holder? Is it NEGIMA!? or MAHOU SENSEI NEGIMA?? Just which relates to UQ holder the most or is it better to watch both? Still if its better to watch both the main thing i want is which relates to the UQ holder anime more, thanks all!

You don't really have to watch any of them. If you read the manga (a daunting task) that will get you up to speed, but the anime's won't do a great job.

The original Mahou Sensei Negima gets you through like the first two arcs and has an anime original ending. At this point in the Negima manga it was still primarily a harem romcom anime, it shifts gears later to become a battle shounen. Aside from seeing the faces of some of the cameos there will be no direct connection to UQ Holder from here.

Negima!? is a spin-off. It's pretty interesting but will give you no insight into UQ Holder.

The OAD's which take place later will give you some insight to the history of the UQ Holder world, introducing you a bit to the universe and show a few more cameos but that's 20 chapters of a 350 chapter manga. Like, literally all the important stuff that carries over into UQ Holder happens after all of this.

The Anime Final movie creates an original ending at that point. I haven't seen it, but from the summary's I've read it ends nothing like the Negima manga, the last 10 or so chapters of which set up UQ Holder.

If you want to see the true set up and connection between the two, you actually have to read both manga. If you want to avoid reading 350 chapters, you can watch the original Mahou Sensei Negima, the OADs and start reading from chapter 200 or so, cutting the manga in half. You won't miss out on too much that way, nothing truly important happens between the anime and the OAD's.

Or honestly, just skip it. I'm gonna finish it up because I'm this far in and I like the UQ Holder manga, but it does this weird, trying to be really faithful to the manga while completely not being faithful to the manga at the same time. It's like they took the manga pages, removed 90% of the pages, shuffled them, and that was their storyboard.

Sigh, I kinda expected this...

The anime rushing UQ Holder is no surprise as there's too many chapters to fit into 12 episodes. Definitely read the manga if you're interested for more. The ED card for this wee

I thought Negima was a rather popular series, and as a Shonen manga I would have thought they would plan it to be more than 12 episodes

this is one series that should have gotten 52 episodes. so much material yet both the author and viewers get a huge middle finger.

Episode 12 (Finale)

So it comes down to choosing to save either Negi or humanity as with the help of Yukihime and Fate, they were able to bring Negi out from Ialda's grasp for a moment where Negi gives Tota the order to kill him. So just when it looked like things were doomed to fail with Kirie's suicide pills being ripped out of her teeth by Cutlass, it was all just a stall tactic to get the Mahora Class 3-A girls summoned as genes of all 31 girls are inside Tota, rather than just Negi and Asuna as he originally thought. In the end, Ialda retreats while leaving a huge mess behind. And then a love confession as Tota is in love with Yukihime, but of course it's unrequited. Seeing that the manga is incredibly detailed that I wasn't expecting much from the ending, but it was still nice to see all of the girls again.

Final Thoughts

Pretty much, this show is only for fans of Negima and Ken Akamatsu's works as once again, the anime adaptation of his work gets mishandled in a big way.  For one, the story is rushed as it leaves out some really important things that happen in the manga.  And second of all, it pays too much attention to fanservice at the cost of enriching the story.  That said, there were still some good things to say about this show as the animation quality is great, the action is nice, the story was full of intrigue and interest even if it wasn't executed well, and the characters, which was a huge strength of the Negima series, continues to be so in this show.  With the nature of this show having one cour pretty much doomed any chances that this show would get a proper adaptation, and as such it rears its ugly head in a big way.

This sums it up pretty well.

I read the original manga and most of UQ Holder (I caught up to the latest chapter recently) and this was a mess from beginning to the end. It's pretty much a show of advertising the manga so anime viewers can get into that medium. There are chapters that were adapted really well but the story is so rushed that it's insalvagable.

If they ever make another anime like UQ Holder, I think they should just remake it.

Episode 12

Everyone got instructions from Asuna on how to deal wth Negi's group and to stall them for 37 seconds. Tota is fighting against Negi and having a hard time and that's when Fate and Yukihime show up to back him up. Fate than cast a spell to draw out the real Negi and he tells him his plan on how to save him. But Negi knows full well that he will still need to be killed if it's going to work so leaves it to Tota to make that decision. once the spell wears off Negi's group defeats all UQ holders with ease and Negi is about to give Tota the finishing blow but hesitates when Kirie jumps in front of him. Since Negi won't do it Cutlass comes in beats Kirie even ripping her suicide pills but she bought enough time. Just than all girls from 3-A get summon as all their genes have also been stored inside Tota. They fight Negi in order to bring him back to his senses but it doesn't work until Asuna shows up. Asuna agrees to go with Negi in order to keep Ialda at bay in order for Tota to get stronger and they retreat for now. In the end Tota confesses to Yukihime and she turns him down as he is 500 years to late.

Final Thoughts

When it came to the show it was handle bad as they skipped so much material just to give us this final fight. They even changed certain parts of the story like how Shinobu met Tota and how they added all the girls genes from class 3-A inside Tota. For now I guess we can consider it filler but it was done in a good way that people can see what they tried to do by adding that. Just like previous Negima anime's it had lots of fan service as it wouldn't be Negima without fan service and they even paid tribute to the first season by using the first opening song. With all the material that is available UQ holder could have been longer than just 12 episodes and it's a real shame that it's not. If they ever plan on making another season it has to be a remake as it would make it up to the fans. Till than the manga will have to do.

It looks like they're at least angling for a second season. Otherwise, why show Dana (a.k.a. the "Witch of the Rift") watching from the top of the stadium near the end of the episode? They skipped the whole arc where Touta and friends were taken for training by Dana, so maybe they were planning on making that arc the basis for season 2?
