I watched half of episode 1. Is it worth it to continue with the entire 1000+ episodes?

I am wondering if it’s actually that good to be long-running, or if people just continue watching it because it is long-running and they are familiar with the characters and storyline, so just watch by default?

So far, I’m not that impressed versus other anime that I can be watching, yet One Piece keeps coming up as one of the all time best (?)

Okay, look. You are far from the first person to express this concern with the show. And it's always THIS show in particular.

Here's what I would do to alleviate the whole, "hundreds of episodes" concern: Break. Down. The Number. Of Episodes. By Arcs! Most Shonen action anime have arcs and One Piece is no exception. You just gotta learn to watch one arc at a time. Let's start by breaking down the first 53 episodes:

-Episodes 1-3: Luffy's first crewmate
-Episodes 4-8: Buggy arc
-Episodes 9-17: Kuro arc
-Episodes 18-30: Baratie arc
-Episodes 31-44: Arlong Park arc
-Episodes 45-53: Loguetown arc

Just start with these six sets of episodes. All of these make up what's called the East Blue Saga and I'll leave it at that. If you find yourself watching through all these episodes and then wanting to see more, we can talk more about that.

There's a reason why it's been one of the hottest anime for 2 decades. It's hard to judge it from only watching half of the first episode.

But it's difficult to recommend starting from the beginning now. We are reaching 800 episodes. If you don't have anything better to do go for it. At least you'll always have something to watch. It's an easy show to binge.

Alright folks thanks. You guys obviously are recommending it.

So I will watch it.

Finished many of my current favorite series already anyway (Classroom of the Elite, Sakura Quest, New Game!,...)

It's a mix of both, it's good enough to be so long running and being such a long running show it forces people to become familiar with the characters. It'll feel like it drags on in parts of the beginning until you get to the alabasta arc and even after that throughout parts of each arc, you gotta just go on cruise control and take it all in and enjoy the long, epic journey and remember it's like that at times to prevent the show to catch up to the manga. It hardly ever takes breaks from airing so they throw in fillers in the middle of some episodes and some are completely filler, just look up a list of filler ep and skip them if you must.

The straw hat crew is made up of misfit kids and all of them have harsh pasts and their bond with one another is definitely a big reason alot of people love the show. It's completely captivating watching such an easy to-get-along-with crew explore this crazy fantasy world in such an action packed way. It's a complete feels trip. watch it! Luffy is typically thick headed and funny but always serious about what he says and when he gets angry and beats up people it's always awesome to watch.

For me,
One piece is like a classic epic, like The odyssey... it's the Anime version of the classic epics of human literature xD

One of the reasons for me that makes it so good... is because it's so long, you really get familiar with the characters and they go through so much.

Sometimes the anime unnecessarily draws things out, and that would probably be it's main flaw. But the fight sequences are great, the story can get tearjerking, and the characters are lovable.... the humor in this anime is interesting lol, I think a lot of the humor is done in the making of side characters and ridiculous worlds.... like Tranny island...

I also binge watched episodes 1-700ish and a little advice when you get around 500 or 600 slow down and pace yourself because when you run out of those 20 minute episodes and you have to wait a week, sometimes 2 or 3 weeks it becomes extremely annoying. Its not like binge watching other series where theres 20 or even 200 episodes. I caught up on the anime and needed my fix so I started reading the manga then I got ahead of the anime and noticed the anime had tons of filler (not nearly as bad as Naruto). Now Im taking a year off watching one piece at a time and just binge watching it once a year. As if Im waiting for a sequel to a movie or a sport to begin its season.

Anyways its defenitely worth the while. The progression of the show is amazing, character development and overall pool of characters is always growing. The world always seems to get bigger and bigger yet smaller at the same time, and no anime character can put a smile on your face like Luffy's foolishness. Also tons of mystery constantly within the show and a great community. My 2nd favourite anime behind Hunter X Hunter.

It's popular because it's good, watchable by all ages, and has a fun world and characters. I didn't really love as much as I do now until after I'd already watched 500 episodes and re-read the manga from the beginning. It's got so much to offer, so I'm sure you'll find at least one thing you absolutely love about the series if you watch or read it long enough (for me it's the world-building).

I hated One Piece, but that may have been because of the bad dubs I saw early on. It's one of my 3 road tips to hell anime. Best I can say is that if you like it then keep watching. If not than drop it.

Simply put, Oda knows how to keep variety going with his settings, he is an expert at tugging at the audience's heartstrings with masterful timing, and he has the luxury of keeping things slow and complex because his series is especially popular. Yes, I think it's worth it. Is it worth it to you? This answer, my child, lies within.

Interesting. So just to calibrate and see if we have similar tastes, which would be your 5 fave animes?

I got turned off of it from watching the first bit on Fox Kids, but a friend of mine loves it and I keep seeing the new episodes pop up here. Might have to check it out.
