Because people want pirate adventure, but the adventure in this shounen manga series is bland with a relatively shallow and repetitive storyline. The problem with Toei is that they didn't transition from hand-drawn to digital animation very well (like Production I.G and such).

My co-workers constantly talk about how good One Piece is, so I gave in and started watching.
I'm about like 80 episodes in and I'm enjoying it.
I am going to continue!
If you have the time, I would recommend giving it a try.

I'm rewatching it from the beginning. I'm currently in Water 7 arc. I'll go through the 800 episodes again. Man, it's so good it feels like the first time.

One Piece is amazing for many different reasons. Great characters, epic moments and fights, sad moments, funny moments and a huge sense of adventure.

Look im gunna tell you what i told my wife when i got her into the series... You NEED to make it to the water seven/enies lobby arc to really judge it. If you make it to those arcs and still find your not enjoying it then id say drop it. I feel like one piece gets allot more serious from the water seven arc onwards and you get a sense of how big the story really is.

I gave it a good 120 or so episodes of waiting to see if I'd like it. At that point I was like "wtf am I doing?"

If you're struggling with it and waiting for it to magically become a series you enjoy, I don't think it'll probably be a series for you. I followed too many people's advice of "wait for it to be good!" And it just...never did. I'm sure there's still people who will be like "oh of course! But you have to watch until episode 264 (or whatever) then it will REALLY get interesting!" But that's just a bunch of bunk.

That being said, you do probably need to give it at least a handful of episodes to properly gauge if you like it or not.

Ballpark how many episodes until I get to the "water seven arc" ?

I don't want to google because I might end up with spoilers.

Thanks.

I started watching from the beginning towards the end of 2015, and I'm currently up to episode 583. I usually binge watch for a while, take a month or so off and go again, I'm glad I stuck with it. It is an anime you do need to give 50 or so episodes before dumping it, and allow for the fact that the anime started back in 1998, so the animation is going to feel relatively primitive.

If you are deciding if you want to watch one piece, I really suggest you do! It is long going, but there are going to really entertain you!

I watched through like episode 50 or so and couldn't take it anymore. The dub version I was watching was horrible, some of the character designs were completely stupid, there being hundreds of episodes of the show still ahead with no end in sight, and the thought that there are probably many other better, shorter shows out there that would be more worth my time. Those are just a few reasons I stopped watching it when I did.

it's not the longest, but yes it is long and enjoyed by many. I rather enjoy it myself and it'd be a loss if they ever did decide to cancel it. the interesting and unique art style and character development and so forth. could they have used something else other than pirates and it'd be just as popular? who knows, look at the other long running things of yesteryear such as Bleach, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon... some have returned and some have started up new whereas some just simply ended and that's the end. so, there's nothing wrong with giving it a try, perhaps ten episodes or so (at least one season), since it's so long and it can take awhile to get use to, settle with the plot and so forth, but I find it enjoyable. never cut the chance to not give something a chance, you're either going to like or not like it, you're not forced to watch it (I hope) so you decide.

I started watching back in March, and right now I'm in the Marineford arc with plans to get through the pre-time skip stuff by the end of the year. I initially watched the 4Kids version back when it aired on TV, and that was simply terrible. I had been meaning to start over from the beginning, and I finally got the presence of mind to do so largely because Fairy Tail is on hiatus and I wanted something to fill the void. There's just so much intrigue that builds up that you just can't stop watching this show, and that's why it is so popular as indicated by its 800+ episodes so far. Simply put, it's a great manga that's part of a high-profile magazine in Shonen Jump, and putting those together is why it is great.

I am wondering if it’s actually that good to be long-running

One Piece is the McDonald's of anime. It's not by any stretch of the imagination good, but it is exactly the same as last time.

Which has a certain value, especially if you're having trouble finding something to watch.
