Good episode. Enjoyed watching Kino wreck the country.

Left wondering about the motives of the woman in the carriage. I assumed she directed Kino to the country out of malicious intent.

Burning question: why do dogs and motorcycles talk?

Fiction isn't exactly supposed to make sense. My question is what breed is the dog based off of. The dog resembles a Kishu Inu to me.

Whelp, I didn't really care for this episode.

It just fast-forwarded way too much. A lot of the interest in the Colloseum chapter was learning why each of Kino's opponents were there. Were they unaware or did they come here on purpose? What did they hope to gain? Was it Citizenship? The new law?

But nope, none of that. It was just getting to introduce us to Shizu and Riku so no one's confused when some of their stories get adapted. I mean, I get it, but it just doesn't make the episode interesting to me. I guess the one point of interest was their decision to give Kino a bit of emotion at the end there, throwing the rocks into the water like that. That was a nice touch. But, overall, the writing was what got me into this series in the first place, and I sincerely hope it polishes up.

Still, I'm glad other people are enjoying it, and getting into the series. Though it can be slow at times, it's been one worth getting into.

Only other thing I can think to say is WOW I was not expecting that as Riku's voice.

The progression for episode 2 was pretty clear from start to finish, but it just didn't match the profound feeling of episode 1. Perhaps it's just that the coliseum felt more abstractly related to the modern world than the town where murder was legal. It just felt like a shitty country full of shitty people set up as a tinderbox to implode upon itself once it's tyrant was deposed and their avarice set loose.

Yeah, still not really feeling this series at all. I think a lot of that comes down to how unengaging I find Kino in general. There's not much going on in the world to care about given the obvious episodic nature so it's all down to Kino and, franky, they're just not all that interesting. This episode did try to shed a little light on Kino at the end with the rock throwing and the comment about revenge being ridiculous despite what Kino had just done but it just felt pretty obvious and surface level to me.

On the upside, though, the OP was excellent both in music and visuals.

It was interesting comparing the two versions of this episode/arc.
in 2003 kino doesn't wreck the country. She proposes a law that puts the citizens little entertainment into more of a risk/reward category.

She also learns about many characters and the laws they want. and even does something on behalf of a dead character.

The king has more personality too, rather than just a debauched figure in a chair.

Not that I really disliked this version. In a lot of ways it was two different to really compare.

2 questions, maybe the source or old series explains better.

Why did the woman tell Kino to come here? I know they met, but did she know Kino was the type of person to be able to win a tournement and change the country for the better? Did she and her husband have an adventure with Kino or something?

What did the dog whisper to the prince? I dont understand the signifigence of that.

enjoyed the episode. Very focused, straight to the point, though a little to predictable.

It's stated in the novel that Kino doesn't understand that woman's motive. I guess it's left up to interpretation.

Beware, the words Riku whispered to Shizu are spoilers. I'm going to break it into two spoiler tags. Reveal the first one for a hint (though, sharing it in this context almost makes it a dead giveaway). Reveal the second tag for the answer.

EDIT: I should maybe mention that if you've read the first post of this topic, and probably also if you've read some of the promotional material for this show, you may have already been spoiled...

Anybody got any leads on where I can find the old series online? Haven't seen it in around 12 years.

This series is great and I'm so happy to see it animated again.
Ep 2 had some nice action in it--love seeing Kino being a badass.

I've seen a few people say they don't like Kino but I actually really like her. I like how she straddles conversations from the outside and wisely puts her thoughts together before attacking with her gun or a biting quip. It's refreshing after so many screaming young male characters that go on long soliloquies. God kill me. lol. An actual thoughtful series that's more than fun for me. It's stuff that will stick with me and make me want to see it again sometime because it actually makes you think.

Oh shit that's a girl? Damn didn't realise.

Picked this up out of boredom, had never heard of it and I was also pleasantly surprised by the content - a little edgier than I had imagined it would be but very interesting - will hang on to this one

Since I've watched the original series, in fact am re-watching it now to remind myself why I like it so much better; I can say this second episode was a major disappointment. It was extremely rushed- no overstatement since in the original this story was stretched over two episodes and had a lot of backstory into why the different people where there fighting in the coliseum (and what its point was). Here we had none of that revealed, it was just rushed through and ended in 18 minutes. I was already worried last week when I saw it advertised as the second episode, as the coliseum story really doesn't belong this early in the story.
I feel like this whole thing was made just to do a restyle. Being this attitude that nothing made before 2010 can possibly look any good or is even anime... well that's BS. I'm sticking with this but felt let down with this episode.

I wouldn't want to do an off-road adventure on a hardtail
