Well I've given the fuck up on the origonal VN so hopefully the anime will give me the story in a better way.

The VN is amazing dude, what exactly put you off of it? It does have a slow start, but it is amazing. And no, there is a 0 percent chance given what we know of the anime that it will deliver the story in a remotely acceptable fashion.

A slow start I can handle, but I'm over 4 hours into the main story and it's still only on setup. I still don't know what the deal with the crazy super powered nazis is, the main character still hasn't done anything and everything is still being presented as a prelude. Even If My Heart Had Wings, a VN about fluff and slice of life without a whole lot of plot or lore by this point had given us a clear introduction to half a dozen characters, a reason for each one to be part of the plot and had set up a clear end goal. But even then I was still fairly okay with chugging through the many, MANY conversations between DI's main character and his friend with awful hair wondering about the serial killer in their town, but when I upgraded my computer I forgot that not all my steam games backed up save data automatically, so the only way I was gonna finish Dies Irae was if I went through the first 4-5 hours again and it was already enough of a chore the first time, so I quit.

1) You can still download the game, hold CTRL to skip the dialogue to the point where you got, it shouldn't take you time at all(like~30 minutes at most)
2) Trust me, every scene, character introduction, and plot point has purpose. Dies Irae is a work that is more about its characters and how they serve this beautiful theme than necessary the plot. And trust me the character writing is top notch as you slowly make your way through it. Trust me.

Man what a mess, just yikes. The animation was horrible too, that fight between the pale bandage people was a joke. This is going to take a really amazing next episode to get me to keep watching. Oh and dressing cool does not automatically make a character cool, anyone else think the Nazi motif is really being overdone lately? Esdeath, Tanya, The Last Witch and I know I am forgetting some.

Tanya was WW1, but yeah, the Nazi theme is way overdone. Even the latest Fate had half it's cast as Nazis.

To be fair, Dies Irae (the source material) predates all of those, and besides as you'll learn the characters aren't Nazis, or at least no longer Nazis. Their ideology focuses on something more ...transcendental.

You'll note I didn't call them Nazis just that they're using their "motif" as do all the others mentioned whether they are or aren't Nazis. BTW how did you break the rules on the size of your pic?

Not feeling this one either. it's a shame because the overall design and premise seems really cool, it seems to be the execution is poor, however.

Trust me the source material is phenomenal in its writing and execution, the anime on the other hand .

Please read the source material( common route is free on steam!). It is a phenomenal story

I don't know, a acquiantance of mine did the picture. As for the motif, sure I'll give you that, but Dies Irae characters are extremely well written and more than their motif. Unfortunately you won't get to see that in the anime due to how you miss on the prose and context from all the routes

Totenkopf more hussar symbology. The Tetenkopf on his had looks more like the one from a Death's Head Hussar than Schutzstaffel. He also seems to have his coach slung over his left shoulder

I can see this first episode was not friendly to newcomers, which is really defeating some of the purpose of an anime.

The 'prequel' events have been flattened to their most basic points. Not naming some of the characters wasn't helpful, and there wasn't much exposition, if anything, to string along the various incidents that were shown.

I'm guess I should lower my expectations somewhat based on this episode, considering how compressed it was.

Ubermensch?

Judging by the artwork on the wikipedia page, the antagonists are large breasted women who like to wear their shirts like 19th century Hussars wore their pelisse.

For the most part, the sprites used in game for the Nazi girls aren't ecchi at all. For comparison:
