Just as lovely as expected, and just as creepy. Not that Elias isn't going to end up trustworthy or anything, and he seems like a nice enough guy, but to buy someone at an auction, call them your puppy and then tell them that they're going to be your wife is a little.. dodgy. I do hope they make the progression of the relationship believable because Chise does deserve a good life given all she's gone through already.

I liked the setup and I like the mystery of this particular world. The first episode was just as good as I hoped it would be and it had some added aspects that were not in the manga which gave it a bit more charm.

The prequels feed well into this first episode as well. They give a good amount of context to the backstory of Chise and a nice little slice of whats to come.

On another note, this season has been pretty mediocre up until now, especially for a fall season. Thus far Mahoutsukai no Yome and Foodwars 3 have been the only solid "will watch shows" for me. I will definitely watch 3-gatsu no Lion 2 and I am on the fence about Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou and Just Because. Most of the other shows are ranging from pretty mediocre to really bad. I guess having 4-5 shows isn't that bad, but normally in a fall season there are at least 2-3 other shows that aren't amazing but still are entertaining enough to watch from week to week.

So do they eventually explain what that auction place was and why she would put herself up for sale, I didn't really get that. Also for someone who was just sold in chains to be embarrassed about the bath thing, wouldn't you have expected the possibility of something even worse happening? Also you don't introduce the maid? This show is rather creepy to me but I guess I'll keep going since it seems to be so highly recommended.

Basically because of Chise's ability to see spirits etc (and the fact they're attracted to her), she was considered a freak.

I think she was going to take her own life, when the guy from the auction house suggests she give her life to someone else instead. So she ended up selling herself as a slave in a magical auction.

I believe this is something similar to a slave auction (in more of a non sexual version bdsm sense then illegal) and she was more or less enticed into being apart of it. If you have ever felt the world against you and that nothing goes right. With enough time suffering you might take any path possible to change it. Even in this case becoming a "pet" for someone else. Just so you can be wanted and belong. That doesn't mean you fully think through every situation that could possibly happen. (side example: if you buy a house out in the country for the peace and quiet with a touch of nature. You might not realize it also means you have to deal with allot of mice, bugs, and other critters regularly in your home.)

As always that is just my opinion and way I see the situation.

I thought this both great and strangely creepy at the same time. Mostly I suppose due to the magus, who while being a nice guy does say the most deplorable things to Chise. Also, as someone who hasn't read the manga or seen any previews, I rather felt thrown in the deep end of the story with some context missing.

I suggest checking out the 3 episode OVA prequels they did. Really good.

The prequels take three episodes to explain basically what's shown in the period of maybe 10 seconds in this first episode: Chise can see spirits, she's an orphan who feels no real connection to the extended family she's passed around in, she's seen as weird by said family for always being gloomy and acting weird, and she spent her childhood feeling barely any reason to live because of all that. While I definitely appreciate the 'show don't tell' method the show takes with those details, they go by so fast they'd be easy to miss in all the eye candy that's constantly thrown at a first time viewer.

Man WIT knocked it out of the park with Ancient Magus Bride. And it's only Episode 1...

This is going to be an amazing show as long as it doesn't fall flat like AoT
