As a white person I can definitively say no part of my heritage involves being an asshole in a polo shirt with a novelty BBQ decoration.

I've spoken to the guy, he's 100% arrogant ass, but not every participant is part of his posse. The statues aren't the issue.

“It was a planned flash mob,” Spencer said in an interview Saturday night. “It was a great success. We’ve been planning this for a long time.”

I'm pretty sure that's not how a flash mob works, but if he wants to use it as an excuse to pop up and run before counter-protestors can organize, could have been worse. At least nobody died this time around.

The violent gun-toting ones were likely a little rattled by the last time.

meh, people are allowed to gather and protest and rally PEACEFULLY when you start attacking and/or doing damage it becomes a riot, regardless of what the media wishes to sugar coat it. don't really care, they are entitled to respect the lies they were fed just like anyone else does. if a person doesn't know history, then let them gather as idiots.

As much as I hate the KKK (they actually bombed the church where I was baptized), I have to say: these are the direct result of provocation by people trying to throw American history down The Memory Hole. Like Charles Barkley said: the statues never hurt people; they've been there for decades. It's the sanctimonious snowflakes that are lighting the fuses on the bombs of white supremacy. It's like finding relic landmines and stepping all over them.

The statue-phobes are also going after George Washington, Ben Franklin, and a whole host of things that have nothing to do with the Confederacy.

The statues were put up in the early stages of Jim Crow specifically to intimidate black people and remind them who was still in charge. The statues have no historical value since they are themselves an attempt to erase history. Furthermore, it makes no sense to glorify people who were some of America’s worst enemies.

Let me see if I understand: the statues erase history by reminding us of prominent figures in history? That makes no sense to me, but...

How does that change the fact that they were not hurting anyone, and this Memory Hole stuff is the catalyst for violence?

The statues erase history by presenting the Confederate cause as something noble or honorable instead of what it really was: treason to protect slavery.

Germany purged all tributes to the Nazis; the US should do the same with Confederate tributes.

Why not just have a statue of a lynched black man in the town square and in the park you can have a fake cotton field where there are statues of black slaves are toiling away? That is literally what the confederates were fighting for. So why even bother hiding behind chide comments about history and just get the REAL point across.

Yes, and Gemany is a self-loathing shithole right now that hates itself to the point of trying to replace themselves with savages. If they were smart, they should of at least kept a few of the statues intact and put them in a museum as a reminder of the dark chapters of their history.

Just like we should at least keep a few. Besides, the America Civil War was nowhere near as bad as ww2 on the German side. We only killed people of this nation over a disagreement over if black people were people or property. WW2 Germany didn't even bother treating Jews like precious property, they just viewed them as plain old unwanted garbage, and they killed any and everyone that stood in their way.

People just need to stop blowing this shit out of proportions. They are statues of history. Good history, bad history, who cares, it's history and needs to be remembered, for those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Considering I smell another civil war over the horizon over politics and ethics of people... I say people are already forgetting. That, or I might just be having paranoia induced smelling hallucinations.
