Hey guys. Wanted to open a thread about martial arts discussion. Do you practice any arts or are interested in doing so?

We're open to discussing all forms, from traditional East Asian arts (kung-fu, jiu-jitsu/judo, tae kwon do), Southeast Asian arts (Muay Thai/Boran, Lethwei, Silat), modern western combat sports (boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) as well as military and self-defense arts (krav maga, systema, Army Combatives, MCMAP)

My background is in freestyle wrestling and boxing. I had some Muay Thai training, but won't consider myself a true MT artist until I can at least kick someone's head. I do, however, have good technique in throwing a Thai style roundhouse and can do some damage to the legs or torso. Someday, when I'm conditioned well enough and also lost a bit of my mind, I'll attempt to do the Muay Thai tradition of kicking through a bat. (I'll post a video when I do!)

I've also had a long interest in kyokushin (hardcore full contact karate; they're also known to kick through bats), but like Muay Thai, have not been able to find qualified instructors in my area. I've also trained in no-gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but I'm probably around white to yellow level.

I did Karate for a couple years when I was a teen. I was inspired by fighting games like Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. It was fun and I made a lot of friends. Then I decided to quit and I got my first job.

I later learned my instructor/sensei was cheating on his wife and went through a nasty divorce. I lost a lot of respect for him since I knew his wife and she was really nice.

I have done a little MCMAP and a fair amount of Tai Chi.

Being completely honest, I want to learn several, but without actually sparring, it all seems pointless for anything more than fitness.

Actually on that point, I know less MCMAP, but learning it made me a much better fighter due to all the grappling I did while learning and with others just to pass the time. With Tai Chi, I probably know a lot more technique, but have much less ability to apply them in a real fight.

I used to do Wado Ryu Karate in my teen years, for something like 6.5-7 years, then pretty much lost all interest in martial arts for quite a while, and now I've been doing HEMA for about 9 months.

Of course I do, I know basic karate, basic taekwondo (like how to stop your opponent from kicking you, that is by attacking the leg rapidly) and even basic tai chi (the martial art that makes waterbenders move fluidly and they can catch your kick then force you to drop straight to the floor). In the street, it's best to be the jack of all trades than a blackbelt. Yep, a blackbelt can get owned by punks in the street, where niceties don't exist and anything goes.

I'm at pre-diabetic levels myself. Staying reasonably active and avoiding heavy sugars (ie. cutting out soda) has prevented me from having to take insulin. Now I just gotta stop eating like a pig and I'll actually be at my fighting weight again!

Mine is the fat boy's diabetes though (type 2). If you have type 1, I can honestly sympathize with you. I have a friend with type 1 and we usually keep an eye on him when we're going out.

I can trace my love for karate back to Street Fighter 2 and Art of Fighting. Unfortunately, it's hard to find full contact karate up here in Alaska. Everything is either a McDojo or strictly teaches only katas and point sparring. Shame to hear that about your sensei though.

Shogun Dojo. Cool name.

I have a black belt in Kempo and some rank in Aikido. These days it's BJJ. I'm a blue belt with a couple stripes.

Awesome! Did the shotokan you learned have full contact sparring?

I made it to 1st Degree in Taekwondo and was in it for nearly 9 years. However, 3 days after my 20th b-day, I got kicked out for saying dumb things. I would like to learn martial arts again someday but I also want a stinking job, move out of my parents' house (again), get a car, and have kids before I'm 35.
