I'm simpleminded so when I watch something and liked it, I give it a good rating. Then again the rating system I use are on Anime Planet, not here on crunchyroll, mainly because I don't have to write a review as well.

Very rarely will I write a review, and when I do it's on crunchyroll.

But stuff I tend to not like, I drop. Why waste the energy writing a review?

There's the part where I don't pay attention to ratings and reviews in the first place until after I've seen the show. I like to experience the show myself first and if I am super bored days later, I read the reviews to see what other people thought about it.

It doesn't help that I'll watch almost anything. xD

Pretty typically only people who really like the show rate it. Everyone else jsut does't bother. If there was some kind of good incentive to rate, then we might see much more accurate ratings.

Being honest 80% of anime on this website is what I would consider 2 star level. Yet almost every show is sitting at 4.5 or higher in terms of rating. Why is there such a lack of negative reviews?

Probably because people don't watch anime they don't like, so the only people bothering to rate them are the people who watched and enjoyed them.

90% this and people just don't know how to rate. On a rating scale 5/5 should he a flawless anime that was perfect beginning to end and considered that by everyone who has viewed it.

What 5/5 actually means on this site is "it held my attention long enough to make a review". 2.5 should be average not good but not bad generally in the middle. People don't leave reviews like that however. They should make the rating system more " user friendly" 1=Horrible 2=Bad 3=Indifferent 4=Good 5=Excellent

I remember a few years back people where complaining how folks where leaving negative reviews while admitting they only went 1-2 episodes in and wanted the review option to unlock at 75%-100% completion. They suggested reviews would be more accurate but they failed to recognize a person who watches 75%-100% of a show will significantly more often then not have a very positive view of the anime which would have a biased effect on the reviews.

Everyone who hates a anime will not sit thru it all just to inform others they disliked it. I really think they should removed the star rating in favor of a emotional rating and simply peg that to a star rating.

TL;DR
Look at the rating then divide it by half 80% of the time.

There is no such thing as flawless anime..... if you think so your retarded.....

See, stuff like this people who can't possibly comprehend a 5/5 10/10 or 100/100 they just mentally can't comprehend it it. They are two busy acting like they have read a comment.

Because they haven't realized the truth yet.

I never read reviews unless it is something I can hold, or use over a long period of time. Obviously with the realization of forced positive reviews that might be what you're reading, you learn who is really writing with satisfaction and concern overtime. I just don't recognize other peoples words as something to understand when it comes to anime.

Are my words any better than theirs? I didn't say that, but I wont deny that it might ultimately be the case, and I am totally aware that I would be ripped apart verbally in most cases. However, I do understand that I have a way with words that creates the most basic of understanding, which then ultimately has connection with most people. I am aware of this, which is why I write, because I know in time this will be my strongest point, and in combination with better vocabulary..... Skies the limit....... Anyways

I'm the kind of person who will have a common appreciation for something just like the next person, but here's the thing.... Don't bullshit me. If I'm going to review something, it is only because I feel the need to leave my honest opinion; good or bad. If I hate something with every ounce of my body, I'm sure as hell going to let you know. If I absolutely love something, I'm going to praise it the best of my ability.

I can go to a lot of anime and give it 3 stars, 2 stars, but whats the point.

The fact people leave misguided reviews is for the soul purpose of......Going with the flow. They don't know whats good or bad, they don't know how to review, they don't know the proper details one would need in order to validate that Overall score.

Anybody can just say. 5/5 Awesome, an absolute best of the season potential. What the fuck does that mean? are you just saying it because you thought at one point something looked cool? You don't care about the story? the pacing? but that character was cool? Hes so bad ass.

Again, people are blinded by the truth from the Shroud of Normality. They can't get use to the fact that most animes cannot stray to far from standards that secure approval in the most depreciating ways.

Again, why do I feel this way...... Why indeed

Because its discouraged when you make an honest assessment of a show. Comments even slightly negative in a shows comment get voted down to hell, same with the show reviews. Just giving a star rating feels weak by comparison and many just don't feel motivated to try.
I try to be honest and I try to comment when I feel strongly one way or another. Yet I've found myself not caring much. About to start watching "Kings Game" the opening part tells me this is not going to be a show for me. This is likely going to be a gore fest with the loosest of stories just there to show off the next nasty killing, but I'll give it the 1 episode make a comment star it and move on but I don't expect my comment to be there in an hour as it will be hidden. We don't want honest reviews we want confirmation of our bias.

Im not generous. If it was good it'll get a good review. If it sucks, like Tokyo Ghoul, it'll get a bad review. I leave most of my reviews on MAL

Ratings are subjective, so it's obvious that people have different standards and will rate things differently. I feel that most people on here only write overwhelmingly positive or overwhelmingly negative; I've hardly seen any 3 or 4-star reviews compared to 5 or 1-star reviews.

I don't really leave reviews or read them (especially not on this website because a lot of the positive reviews reek on bias and I find a lot of reviews on other sites to be a bit condensing or a long read}. I prefer looking at the synopsis of a show or reading discussions (if the show is airing; it's good to get quick opinions, if that makes sense) to see if I think I'll like a show or not. Though reviews can be helpful in some cases; for example, I was reading this review of this LN that I wanted to read. It was a bit spoilery, but the person said that in the LN the guy has 3 wives (which I wouldn't have gotten from the synopsis) and I'm just like yeah...this isn't my thing. SO they can be good if you want to know if there's something that you might not like in a series.

I'm seen a lot of people with really weird rating systems on the likes of MAL (I remember there was this one person who's lowest score for everything was 5/10, which just seemed really weird to me). I don't usually drop shows, but when I do, I kind of pretend it doesn't exist (i.e. I don't put it on my MAL), in that sense, I've only really rated things that I've somewhat enjoyed (though I've sat through a fair amount of shitty anime). I'm not super generous with my ratings either, even though I usually base them on my enjoyment of a series.

If they like it, it's a 4 or 5.

Most people don't like to use the whole 5 point scale. They will usually stick to the 3-5 range. What they don't realize is that a 3 is not bad. It's average. 2 is slightly below average. You can enjoy a 2.

Granted, a 5 point scale is pretty limiting. Sometimes you want to give something a 5 but it's not quite perfect, and sometimes you want to give something a 1 but it wasn't completely terrible.

To bother reviewing a show it'll be either because someone loved it or hated it. A simply, "Yeah, that was OK, wouldn't watch it again" is less likely to get a review.

It's a function of self-selecting samples. You need to look out for it in proper experiments so your results don't get skewed.

I personally like the positive ratings. I'm also more curious about the reviews that follow up on a high rater than those that rate low. This is because I think I want to go into watching anything with a positive attitude. Why? Because I'm a negative person and need that caffeine.

One reason might be that if Person A leaves a negative review on a show, they might worry they have upset Person B.

That may be the case for some people, but what about few years later. Would you still something that's average the same way as back then? Some may, some may not.

Do i trust reviews? Let's say half the time. I'll mostly read those from MAL or i simply decide whenever i watch it or not.
