Anime has been one season from "death" for pretty much our entire lives, if you listen to people.

No, and if it were, it more or less a symptom, as we all know that...Humanity has declined...recently.

It will be more enjoyable if you try not to focus on similarities but how different properties put twists on things, how they present character growth, etc.

I believe you are right nDroae, but I think the standards for anime, music etc are so much lower now that future watchers/listeners are going to have much less quality works to pass along to the next generation.

I mean no? Been watching anime since like 1999 and most of my favorites are from recent years. Maybe try expending? This season has lots of great stuff already and I watched like only 5 shows so far.

Thanks guys for responding. I still think anime has turned to nothing but repetitive and dull shows. High school boy this, magical girl that. Somebody stuck in a game. Just not interested in that type of anime.

I would say that anime is approaching a time where it will have to change. What I mean here is that with anime in particular, production quality has kind of dipped. We get a high budget show once every few years, and aside from that we are usually riddled with a bunch of 1 season (usually 11-12 episodes) low budget shows that don't have an ending. It makes me wonder if the anime industry is really working with a sustainable business model here. Also if people will just end up getting bored with the increasing quantity of low quality shows.

I am actually constantly more impressed with western entertainment (both video games and tv) these days than I am Japanese entertainment to be honest. South Korea also seems to be dishing out some interesting things as far as video games go. I think Japan in general may be getting somewhat stagnant.

Not really. I like a lot of what's coming out now. But last season was rough.

Keep in mind most anime are for people in my age range- teens.....and kids. Mature, avant garde shows with ambitious storytelling don't sell well. In Japan, or here. This is a fact. So my recommendation is to just watch all the really good stuff that IS out. There are shows that come out once in a while that are incredible, like a Steins Gate.

When I think if anime has declined, I think instead...

Humanity Has Declined.

I think most people remember only the really good shows from the past, but forgets the really bad ones. For every Ranma 1/2 there are hundreds left in the dustbin of history. As far as creativity goes it too falls in the same type of effect. We remember the first time we story with/involving X, but any other story that has something like X then we think it's not that creative. Anime like all living things evolves over time. To help my enjoyment of anime I try to not go into a show with any ex[expectations and let the show try to sell itself to me. granted, I do have some favorite genres such as Rom-Com or Slice of Life, but that only comes into play when selecting what shows I will give a chance to. I admit that I should be better about this since one of my favorite anime of all time was initially watched because I misunderstood the genre for it. I thought The Irregular at Magic High School would be a comedy based on the title. But I am glad I was wrong.
