This has been a relatively weak year for new anime, we have had some good continuing series, but new content has been weak.

My feeling is that this down period without many exceptional new shows could contribute someone to think anime is declining, but more likely than not, it will probably rebound soon.

Crunchyroll is declining, perhaps too much competition. It's ending up as the BL & fujoshi hub, all the good stuff going elsewhere.

Declining, no. Becoming repetitve, yes.
Lots of remakes out there, and alot of anime that are just copies of each other

Not sure if it counts but last 5 seasons have been pretty mediocre IMO. Out of all the shows this season only Violet Evergarden looks remotely promising. Everything on CR atm just isn't entertaining to me. Not to say I am holding it to some high standard from past shows... just watched first episodes and it all felt really forced, and the shows just didn't grab my attention.

Curious, and apologies if this is against forum rules to ask, but what are the 'elswhere' options? I only know of this and Funimation. Looking through the listing on this site alone I'm already overwhelmed!

Anime has never been better. 2017 gave us so much amazing stuff in all genres. Moe, serious, yaoi, yuri, shonen, seinen, dark, happy, romance, sports, fantasy and sci-fi. 2018 just started and its already beyond amazing with hits like Cardcaptor and Devilman. If you think anime is declining you are wrong and probaly jusy burned out. It happens. Go away and come back in like a few months.

I don't think so. I've been watching since the 90s, and among three of my absolute favorites (Rakugo, Monogatari Series, Sangatsu no Lion) aired seasons last year. Not to mention other notable titles, and then some odd 100+ series I enjoyed enough to complete in 2017. Perhaps its people's taste that don't fit with the times.

If by 'dying' you mean failing as an industry, then no. Of course not. If by 'dying' you mean not catering to your tastes... Dunno. Probably. Different tastes, and such.

Yes the quality have decreased. If you got into it a couple of years ago then you've probably not noticed it.

But as someone who have been in the medium for 10+ years I can say that the quality has decreased. And no that isn't me being a nostalgic as I can explain.

In the past we had less anime being released per season, so maybe we got 10 anime total for a season. However now we have more studios making anime and talent in the industry being spread more wide. So we might get 46 anime total per season, this also means that there is a LOT more shitty anime then there used to be.

The anime industry have also ever since the western anime crash of 2006 focused on merchandising too much and re-doing things that have been proven to be successful. This means that we don't get as much unique and original ideas brought into the anime medium because companies aren't willing to take the risk.

But everything isn't doom and gloom, we do still get some really kickass anime, it's just the ratio of good to bad that's changed. I also think the anime community kinda hypes up the wrong anime.

With cashcows like Dragon Ball Super and One Piece (Toei transitioned poorly from tradition animation to CGI), the media may decline. I remember when SAO was trying to be a cashgrab, but at least the series is like yesterday's news, same with Sailor Moon Crystal (a relatively unwise transition from the old to the new). No wonder anime will continue to be pirated as long as Japan will market the media as a hindered and poorly-made product with slow-framed animations, if not worse, rather than a work of art, reflection of one's talent, whatever.

Off-topic, but I'm sorry Caitlin Glass, you are wrong about people not being meant to watch anime that isn't licenced in their country or whatever plus nobody deserves to spend money or risk arm as well as limb to see endless crap-quality animation being made.

A friend of mine who is into space opera and found Twilight Axis to be very underwhelming. Another example of style over substance in recent anime, what is up with that three minutes per episode crap and appalling storyline?

This generation of anime is simply aimed at younger people, which may also be insulting to taste and intellect in the long run for them or everyone (I'm looking at Fate/stay night: UBW, which got me real bored and sleepy after the first two episodes, as well as Dragon Ball Super). I understand why some 80s fanboy thinks modern anime has declined plus I agree with him about modern anime art-styles being dead and no good.
