I don't know how many of you have noticed it, but there is a banner on the front page of CR that says "The New King of Shonen is Here", referring to Black Clover.

So far, I am inclined to say that if Black Clover is the "new king" of anything it is mediocrity, certainly not shonen. The voice acting is poor, and the two episodes that have aired thus far are completely average in almost every way imaginable. I am hoping that the series gets better as we go along, but I doubt it will ever become the top show in shonen,

What are your thoughts? Is it the king, does it have the potential to become the king, or is it a dud?

Meant to start this in the poll forum, can somebody please move it?

Apologies. Not trying to violate the rules, honest mistake.

If you report your own post with this request the mod who gets the ticket can move it for you.

As for Black Clover, idk. The manga sales are high but not that high, just some hype PR I guess.

My perspective is sort of moot because I generally don't enjoy shounen to begin with but I will definitely agree that Black Clover is pretty poor as an anime. Outside of looking fairly good, which is truthfully something not that many shounen series can't boast of, it feels completely and utterly generic. And that's coming from someone who isn't even intimately familiar with all of the details of the genre. Add to that one of most annoying main characters I've ever come across in any medium and you don't have a winner. That said, from what I hear the manga is fairly popular and that seems like it's all that matters. If it seems like "the next big thing" it usually is, quality be damned.

So, should it be the next big thing? Personally, I don't think so. Will it be the next big thing? I wouldn't be shocked.

As a manga reader I definitely like Black Clover, but being above average doesn't make it the king. It's far too derivative and not nearly deep enough to hold a candle to the shonen series we grew up with as kids (well, maybe its on the same level as, say, Shaman King, but I think most of us know that's not really what I meant). Black Clover is a really fun manga, but it has no right to the claim of King of Shonen, especially not when One Piece is still around.

I don't watch Black Clover, not that I care about new anime anyway. I doubt that people will care about this anime in the long run. Look at Ghost in the Shell, time has passed and nobody cares about the series anymore. Look at how Death Note went from totally popular to relatively popular (ask my brother and I don't see him devoting his time to reading or watching Death Note anymore). Very few anime will achieve both popularity and longevity for generations to come.

Its definitely up there as one of the best ongoing shonen right now. There is a reason why its always high in JUMP rankings. Its generic yes, but it handles execution really well. That's really what matters in the end. Helps that the anime started really strong too.

Crunchy calls it the new king mostly as PR and I mean it work really well for them. Black Clover's views were pretty insane. The first episodes ratings reached like 3.7k in a week. That's pretty damn good. Since those actually taking time to rate a show are usually the minority and have to watch on PC.

I do say i like how that annoys the hell out of people who likes to call the worst. Its really funny.

Oh the new king is definitely MHA. Black Clover does have the potential to eventually be a contender.

Not gonna sugarcoat this, you have a terrible way of judging whether or not people care about a series. Both Death Note and GitS are almost always brought up as the greatest anime of all time, they're not unpopular just because the people who are already fans don't watch them constantly. No shit people are going to watch or read a series more while it's ongoing than when it's finished, that doesn't mean it lacks longevity, it just means they've already read or seen it.

I'd much rather see My Hero Academia as the king of shonen. It's certainly got the popularity and isn't criticized as much as Black Clover is. No offense to fans of Black Clover, but the series is basically built on shonen stereotypes from what I understand. I've heard it constantly compared to Naruto, which wouldn't be that big of a deal if Black Clover came out a long time ago around the same time as Naruto, but since it's actually a new manga it just gives the impression that the writer is trying to ride the wave of Naruto's popularity. I haven't read the manga so I can't confirm if the similarities are accurate, but that's what basically everyone familiar with it has said. Asta is also one of the most annoying protagonists in the history of shonen protagonists.

I don't see it as the"King of Shonen" but now that MHA is over till the 3rd season, Black Clover is taking over the hype to fill the emptiness that MHA left. At least for me idk. Asta is really annoying but I won't let that bug the main point the writer of the manga wanted to tell and tbh the execution of the anime was well made. Its not a bad anime but I wouldn't go as far as calling it the King. At least not yet.

There is no new king of shonen. One Piece is the king of shonen, still. It's been running for 20 years without end in sight.

I don't think so. I'm starting to think that they are using that as a way to get people to watch the show and possibly read the manga.

I thought I was the only one who thought that.
