Have we ever had a former President who was popular enough for this to happen while he was still alive, and so soon after he left office?

Honestly, maybe there's some value in the contrast, but Obama was a pretty good President. It's just internets make people really foolish. I hope he gets the historical recognition he deserves.

The depressing thing about this is that the focal point is the fact that it was once named the President of the Confederate States.
This is not the first school to have ever been named after President Obama.

List of Schools that have President Obama's Namesake:
Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy at B.F. Darrell (https://www.dallasisd.org/obama)
Barack & Michelle Obama Elementary School (https://www.spps.org/obama)
Barack Obama Elementary School (Maryland) (http://www.pgcps.org/barackobama/)
Barack Obama Elementary School (New York) (https://www.hempsteadschools.org/Domain/12)
Barack Obama Charter School (https://barackobamacharter.org/)

I believe there are more than that but this illustrates my point.
This article was only made due to the fact that it was, previously, named after Jefferson Davis.
Which leads me to believe there's the overall desire to focus on the "Civil War vs Modern Day Liberalism" battle that seems to be brewing behind those who oppose the removal of artifacts from the Civil War, in general.
Otherwise, this is not necessarily a newsworthy article being that multiple schools have been built and named using President Obama's namesake.

B-b-b-b-but Obama's ancestors owned slaves!

Actually, this is fine. Unless a president is absolutely Caligula, then he should have a few schools named after him. Though, I want a statue of him out in front. It has to be bronze, with this pose

There's a street by me they renamed after Obama not long after he was inaugurated.

But for the topic on hand I think it's fitting & progressive. And if the population of the area, the faculty, students and parents are for the name change then that's all that matters. I mean, 89% of the student population is black and your school named after Jefferson Davis. A man who fought to oppress blacks and keep slavery. It almost makes me think what took them so long.

That's great, I'm down with whatever washes away that ugly shit stain called slavery. But you have to remember, one reason the deadliest war in American history didn't turn into a prolonged insurgency afterwards was because the victors showed their defeated foes some solemn respect, despite their enslavement of people. Like a family that went through some shit. Part of me thinks that's the only reason America isn't tearing itself apart now.
