Name genres in other media that you think should be present in anime. For example, I think there should be a some court show or adult comedy (I mean comedy written from an adult perspective, not sex comedy, but something relatively sitcom-ish) should be at least a bit more present. I find shounen action, romance comedy or slice of life to be too generic for my tastes.

Well there is Ace Attorney. There are also some Adult Oriented comedies, like Servant x Service, which has an Office vibe to it. Also Working. IMO the Funimation Shin Chan was fairly adult, even if it was about a Kindergartener.

Although I suppose Servant x Service is considered Slice of Life. What would you consider a comparable comedy to what you desire in Western media? To me, Seinfeld and The Office are a couple of quintessential Adult Comedies, but I would also consider them Slice of Life

Servant x Service or Shin Chan doesn't sound like the kind of anime that I would enjoy, the artstyles in both anime feel out of place for me. I'm thinking of Harvey Birdman, The Boondocks, Beavis and Butthead etc in terms of adult comedy, but more importantly, I'm not looking for recommendations, I just want opinions on other genres others thinks should be present in anime.

There are more genres represented in anime than in other media, you just have to look for them.

I wish people would acknowledge non-action and non-high-school anime more often...

Before someone suggests Reality TV as a missing genre it may be worth checking out Starship Operators.

In terms of adult comedy, Pikotaro's Lullaby is a recent example.

Maybe, I've seen a lot of anime, but the comedy part (the major genre in anime) is rarely written or formatted from a more masculine or adult standpoint. I like action anime too, but action anime rarely give out or emanate some sort of classic Jackie Chan movie feel.

....... but all other media are like... 90% those genres. There are enough of those things in the world. Let anime be the one place where you can find something other than that.

I am not sure the Western style comedy goes well in Japan. Does anyone know how well shows like Venture Brothers, South Park, Family Guy and Rick and Morty do in Japan?

Art style aside, One Punch Man and the Funination dub of Shin Chan are the closest anime I have seen to Harvey Birdman.

That was my thought. I look to anime for something different, but if you look hard enough, anime covers almost everything. Police Procedurals and Medical dramas are a big thing in Western Media now, they seem to be less represented in anime, but I am personally burned out on those genres. I wouldn't mind more serious military dramas close to Gate but without the fsntasy or sci-fi elements.

I personally don't really have one.

But thinking of stuff that may not exist; maybe non-fictional stuff, like the weekly news recap (of actual events) or something.
There are some how-to anime like that alcohol drinks show this season though.....

Anime built around first-person shooter culture. We've had a ton of anime revolving around MMORPGs, like Dot Hack, Log Horizon, and Sword Art Online. So surely, there's room for anime revolving around online multiplayer FPS's, right?
