I noticed that a lot of anime based on video games have primarily been MMORPGs, such as Dot Hack, Log Horizon, and Sword Art Online. But there aren't any anime based on first-person shooter culture. Were there any I missed? If not, then why are there so few FPS anime?

Sabagebu! is probably close. But would you expect the anime to be in the first person perspective?

Maybe because FPS games aren't as popular or profitable in Japan. I want to see anime based off FPS games just as much as I want to see an anime based off of MechWarrior games (which has deeper and more complex war stories than your average mecha anime like Gundam or Armored Trooper Votoms and its deep, complex war stories are deeper as well as more complex than anything you see from Evangelion). Another problem is that modern anime lack an atmosphere made from a more manlike perspective (saccharine artstyles as well as typical anime archetypes and first-person shooters don't mix), so you can't have an anime based off a conventional shooter game without calculated, manly writing. The problem I have with fantasy anime (even though I like Berserk and Record of Lodoss War) is that they just don't feel masculine enough nor do they have an atmosphere comparable to Lord of the Rings.

You've been trapped inside the popular game 'CS:GO' in the land of DUST II, you have two minutes to plant the bomb or die trying, for eternity.

What makes a 'You are trapped in an MMO' anime interesting? It takes someone from modern times and puts them into a fantasy style world with swords and magic. You don't need to be trapped in a game to be in a world with guns, we already have that. SciFi/Cyberpunk/Military/Mech style anime would tend to cover what you're looking for. Plus FPS usually take place in a boxed canyon in the middle of nowhere, with no way in or out and two bases...

RPG-type games, particularly MMOs, probably make for better stories? More adventure and/or player interaction. A non-MMO FPS game anime sounds really boring... But then again I don't even care for FPS games in the first place...

FPS games aren't a popular genre in Asia, really.

Most FPS games have fairly garbage stories that only serve to justify shooting at things.

There's less of a.. microcosm of society.. in FPS games, as there's little persistent player interaction. More often than not, you'll never see any of the people you play a random match with ever again.

And finally... To be honest, most FPS culture involves trash-talking and violating corpses. Even Planetside, which is basically an FPS MMO hybrid, had player interactions mostly consisting of trash-talk within your squad and people trash-talking in server chat.

On the other hand, an anime based off a first-person shooter would need an artstyle like in The 08th MS Team or Macross Plus. Nowadays, anime artstyles want to be saccharine with lower frame rates than a video game, which would a terrible idea for a Call of Duty, Half-Life, Goldeneye, Halo, Prey (has a pretty solid storyline and is very underrated), Far Cry, Metroid Prime, Cold Winter or Battlefield anime.

Because a lot of them are based off book or light novel as the anime and manga community like to call them. Don't know about most of them, but Overlords books are a lot better then the anime, and that's saying a lot because Madhouse did the anime. I think season two will be better though because they kinda half assed season 1 for them. Also it's Japan.... RPGs are king there... Also do you like watching people play FPS.... I don't... I have to be playing and still it's not that great... SN: This is from someone that thinks Halo 2 is the best FPS that ever came out.

I'm rather curious about this statement. What characteristics would you say makes something masculine?

Whats the point of having all the anime characters ( which are made to look cool/cute/evil etc ) running around .. if the only part of them that you get to look at is the arms?.

Self-sacrifice, a quiet and controlled personality, pain resistance, fighting courageously and determined during a heated battle or struggle, a tireless underdog persona striving for strength and battle scars, risking life and limb for those you love, tireless sense of duty (like Char Aznable or The Terminator), the list goes on.

You'd have to do it in third person then...and then you'd be looking at their butts.

Only real anime I've seen like this was the bit at the start of Girls Und Panzer where it was done in first person which was cool but a whole anime like that? No, don't think so.
