You're killing me Crunchy. Don't make me hold Crunchyroll Hime hostage now

I was half inclined to cancel my sub when I saw the Haruhi news, having been stung just a few too many times by the total crapshoot the Funimation deal turned out to be for England half the time. I’m slightly hopeful for Lucky Star coming to the UK at some point given Anime Limited just chucked Tatami Galaxy on here for UK folk, but Haruhi’s rights minefield makes it unlikely. Not terribly chuffed.

Oh, Seiyu's Life, one of my top 10 anime of all time. Maybe I should write a review.

Nice for Lucky Star! Now we need Funi to get us back Gosick since that’s been gone from CR for several years, and maybe even Hyouka! I’d like to be optimistic and hope for Nichijou, but the fact that it’s not even stream on Funi’s site makes me think they only have home video rights

Yeah, it seems like Nichijou is as you say. But for a time (I'm not sure how long) they had Gosick and Code Geass available on physical media only as well. Haruhi and Lucky Star were like that for a while after Funi became able to start distributing them. (2016?) I read that Nichijou sold terribly low in Japan whereas it's very popular in the west (I hate it ), so you might expect the publisher would want to get those international streaming revenues...?

Thread on the Funimation forum: https://www.funimation.com/forum/topic/10412/is-nichijou-my-ordinary-life-going-to-avaliable-to-stream-on-funimationnow-tomorrow

IIRC Funi just acquired Gosick and Hyouka this year, so I'd expect them to hold onto them as exclusives for longer, but then again I would have expected the same with Haruhi and Lucky Star. Always interesting what comes over.

What's the best way to eat dessert? Do twins really have a psychic connection? What kind of guys are into
moe girls? These are the kinds of questions that float through the inquisitive mind of anime super-fan Konata Izumi. When she’s not lost in her favorite manga or logging hours in one of her online games, she’s debating the mysteries of the universe with the best friends a girl could ask for.

And, of course, the Lucky Channel segment, which has much more fans.....RIIIIIGHT?????

(But no, you had to put the "dessert" thing right up there first in the description. Go ahead, mock the suffering of all us first-time watchers who had to wait half of the entire first episode to try and figure out what the show was about...Slap us down like that episode did, why don'tcha.)

It didn't sell as badly as most people in the west seem to believe (the Oricon report indicates sales averaged 3,024 per video volume for the initial release, and 3,996 on a re-release, for an overall average of 7,020).

The problem apparently wasn't simply the sales, but the cost of producing the series vs. those sales.

These are Funimation titles from the past (The newest so far is Servamp, which ended just over a year ago). Funimation had no interest in licensing for Latin America. Even the titles those that include Scandinavian countries wasn't something Funimation sought, it simply came along with the minimum license from that publisher.

When the Funimation partnership was announced, there was some hope that at least on some of the newer titles, Funimation might have been "stuck" with an "All the Americas" license for some titles, but there has been zero evidence of that thus far that ever happened.

Erebus25 wrote:

Unlikely. That would require either a title that had been sitting dormant, with no licensing outside of Japan, or one where for some reason the publisher insisted anyone licensing it couldn't have exclusive streaming rights for their region.

Ohh, Coyote Ragtime Show...Also saw the first ep, but of the handful of series that iconically DEFINED What Went Wrong With The 00's Licensing Bubble, this was one of the two carved on ADV's tombstone.
I remember back when ADV had their video podcast, and kept trying to sell us synopsis videos of all the obscure new current-airing series they were licensing for disk, back before digisubs and next-day streaming were invented.

And I wouldn't say the over-the-top dystopian-space-mercenary style is "derivative", but there's the old story that 60's pop group The Beau Brummels picked their name so that they would alphabetically be next to The Beatles in every record store in the country.
If "Coyote Ragtime Show" makes absolutely no sense as a title in context of the series, consider its alphabetic proximity to Cowboy Bebop.

The license Funimation took out probably does not read "Nordic Countries", but "Scandinavia". By general definition Finland is not part of Scandinavia, so it's also not part of the license.

It may well not be "by general definition" ... the license may have an appendix that specifies which countries are in which "region" as used in the licensing terms. For licensors that license by region, that avoids legal risks of later conflicting claims.

Clearly, however, Japanese licensors were not in the habit of thinking of Finland as part of a common region with Norway and Sweden, and it has been negotiations from Crunchyroll to get it included that has led to so many Crunchyroll simulcasts including Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland as a block (often but not invariably including Iceland).

For these Funimation licenses, at the time they were signed, Funimation basically hadn't had any market experience streaming for Scandinavia, and probably didn't realize that they should have been asking for Finland as well.

Also Iceland isn't included into the "real" scandinavia...it only includes Denmark,Norway and Sweden so why leave Finland out of Nordics group...since Iceland is included in Nordics not Scandinavia...it annoys to see that we Finns never get those sweet animes what rest of nordic countries get
