I don't remember the anime, but a character said something in ENGLISH and it was subbed wrong. How in hell could they make that mistake? IIRC; it was a Funi show.

might you be thinking about Ben-To? it was added a while back, but when I looked to watch it, there seemed to have usual issues of kinds, like odd sounding nicknames, to the subs going, it exploded like st mount Helen or something when it sounded like the word nitroglycerin was spoken. Ben-To is an funimation translation originally.

It could have been. I only watched a couple of Ben-To episodes before giving up on it. Obviously I tried to bury that memory deep in the darkest part of my mind.

well, the nitroglycerin speaking was in the first couple episodes, my recommendation. [The site that shall not be named] where I saw it first, so maybe that just sounds better to me, but I think it was more like someone watched the original sub and cleaned up several areas that didn't sound solid enough.

Without any kind of quote I can only speculate, but some English words are used very differently in Japanese.

If it was supposed to be a character actually speaking sentences in English though I don't know what to tell you.
