I was pleasantly surprised that Crunchyroll is now streaming The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya; having learned of anime only in the past few years, I hadn't seen it. But now that I have, I am curious: Haruhi is the kind of anime ripe for analysis; what are the major schools of thought on/interpretations of it? And of course, the necessary sub-question: what was Endless Eight supposed to be?

I have my thoughts, but as I don't really know what others have thought before me, I figured it best to ask first.

AH. I remember arguing about this when I was in my HEY-DAY of Animu watching. Though, at the end of the day. Tsuruya is BEST GIRL. "LAWL"

What's the Endless Eight? Easy. Only the greatest trolling of any fan base by its creator.

It was such a good troll I couldn't even be angry afterwords, only impressed.

Explain Haruhi Suzumiya?

An anime director decided he wanted to bring memes to the medium.

That sounds about right to me.

I simultaneously guessed that was a trap and genuinely fell for it anyway. Maybe I am the cutest imouto

I think I saw someone else say that as well, and I didn't understand. What do you mean? What does Haruhi have to do with memes?

Haruhi has been the broodmother of countless memes. I'm surprised you havent seen them.

Nope, I haven't. I'm not from the internet.

And that makes it sound like the medium was brought to memes, not the other way around. It's not possible to predict that a show will spawn memes, so that couldn't have been its purpose. Though if a large fraction of existing memes is somehow dependent upon The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, that would indeed be interesting.

That makes no sense. Not only does it not being possible to accurately predict memeticism not mean that it's impossible to try and create a meme from the ground up at all, but the idea that creators couldn't make something for the purpose of making memes is patently false in and of itself. Portal, for example, is one of the spawnpoint of several incredibly popular memes and its creators have gone on record saying this was by design.

I'll give you that it's possible to aim at becoming something like a meme, by taking into account the properties of the audience - and, further, anything new aspires to be memorable. But if it fails to be memorable, the meme doesn't take off in the first place. I don't think it's so easy to define something as having the purpose of inspiring memes, because memes are an emergent thing. Anyway, why is it that you think Haruhi's purpose was to spawn memes? Because that's a fairly strong claim. I guess I can see Endless Eight, Haruhi as god, and Mikuru becoming memes, but even of those, only Endless Eight seems close to being purposefully conducive to producing memes.
