You know how Shinji, Asuka, and Rei either have dead mothers or no mothers whatsoever?

Why don't the three main EVA pilots develop a surrogate family out of each other, to make up for their dead/nonexistent mothers? Surely, they'd be a lot more than just the physical and psychological trauma they'd experience piloting EVA's to fight angels on a regular basis. Plus, they're a team fighting a common enemy, which means a lot of teamwork would have been involved in defending a post-apocalyptic Earth from waves of angels.

In a way, they already have. Look at the character dynamics that exist between them. As a good friend of mine once put it, in regards to Shinji:

Asuka is "woman as sister".
Rei is "woman as mother".
Misato is "woman as lover".

It gets complicated to explain, but it can more or less be boiled down to that. Fans -- and there are a lot of them! -- who look at Evangelion as a '90s "waifu war" between Asuka and Rei miss a lot of the themes the series contains.

Cause they're emotionally damaged and distant. The main driving ideal for Neon Genisis Evangelion is the "Hedgehog Dilemma".

That is actually pretty neat, once I think about it. I would definitely adopt Asuka as my little sister.

It's interesting to see how these relationships change with each release/iteration of the Evangellion series. Although nothing ever happened, Misato said something in the very first iteration that placed her directly in the lover category. (nothing happened since she died when Sinji was off on his mission.)

Because grabbing your mom's boob as you fall on top of her is a-ok I guess.

Oh wait, wrong scene

Considering the Rebuild Movies are technically episode 27 onward of the entire series....I'm sure they'll have time to grow along with throwing Marie into the mix.

This.

There is a reason 2 out of the 3 have/had such a strong connection to their Eva units.

Correction: Having hundreds of copies of your mother waiting to replace the other, and a hulking godlike mecha as your real mother that can't talk or signify its love for you is WAY out there.

Don't forget being reinserted into the "womb" , every time you pilot "her".

They do mention the LCL in the entry plug is similar to amniotic fluid.
