I just finished the first episode, Messenger of Iscandar, and I just have to say I loved it. I'm a huge fan of the series and it's pretty much the reason I fell in love with animation in general and then anime later. (At the time it was first broadcast in the US it wasn't revealed to be a Japanese series. I learned that years later in college.)

I think Funimation did a great job with the casting and I'm looking forward to finally getting to see the entire series. (An aborted effort years ago to release it in the US stopped at the third volume. ='( )

Fingers crossed Funimation gets to do a Blu-ray release.

I get a sense of nostalgia watching a certain subset of space anime, particularly Space Battleship Yamato, Outlaw Star, Irresponsible Captain Taylor, and perhaps Captin Harlock, among many others.

I perhaps would leave older Gundam series out. While I am not too well versed in this era, as I wasn't even born yet, the attitude towards space seems strangely wonderful from a 2017 perspective. It is something I do not see that much today, but perhaps the aged animation is more responsible than whatever attitude I perceived.

Thanks for posting this. I never knew CR got it from Funi. I used to love Star Blazers till I realized how Americanized it was made into. I wonder why CR is doing a weekly release since it has been out since 2012 or 2013?

It was first released as a series of movies in 2012, with the series airing on TV in April, 2013. As to why now? All I can say is better late than never.

This is a very good updating of a classic story (and, boy, do i wish the original Macross story would get such an updating). I really enjoyed this series, and not just for the nostalgia/ I used to watch this show after school when I was a kid, and it was the first show i watched that i was aware was anime (Speed Racer, I didn't know, heh), and understood what anime was.

Despite complaints about the Americanization/Westernization of Star Blazers, they completely kept the heart of the series. People died, and not just bad guys, and the whole Earth was in jeopardy

Despite the fact that, when the original batttleship Yamato sank in 1945, the smoke from the explosion of its magazines detonating could be seen 99 miles away on Kyushu, which should've told anyone about the condition of the wreck, it would not be until the discovery of that wreck in 1984, that the general Japanese public became aware that there was no way such a wreck could be rebuilt as a space battleship (sort of like the book and movie Raise the Titanic! also came out prior to the finding of that shipwreck). This resulted in a release from the confines of the original ship, resulting in a larger Yamato, and one not restricted by the originals interior layout. So, whereas the 1974 anime is a rebuilt Yamato sent into space, this is an entirely original Yamato, which was built at the site of the original wreck, and used many of the design elements of what was arguably the most powerful battleship in history, but is over 100 meters longer with other positive design changes.

So..Yeah! Glad we get this! Finally!

What pissed me off was the whole end of Sgt. Knox bit. You know he went out on a virtual kamikaze mission to atone for his behaviour, but they had to add: Oh, Sgt Knox radioed in and will be back in 5 minutes. I knew about the Titanic BEFORE it was officially rediscovered. I worked for the Navy (civilian role) and talked to somebody in the know and as we talked about Raise the Titanic he snorted and said just wait till they "find" the Titanic. It can't be done. While I was at a Reserve base (Naval Air Station) we had a lot of Submarine communicator specialists. But since had no submarines or submarine communications gear they could check in, do stuff then spend a lot of time at the CPO Club or visit the PX and buys massive qualities of beer for no tax. Hell since I worked for the Navy I used the PX too. No Tax was fun. But since my dad was USAF with 100% medical discharge I still had a valid ID card so I could make purchases for him. Oddly enough I miss those days a lot. Sorry for the digression.

EDIT: I just listened to the Space 2199 OP on YouTube and it is very nice. But I have to admit I like this version better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9h_llpo4Gc The eerie, but beautiful and mournful backup singers makes it for me.

That they kept the SFX for things like the guns firing or the planet bombs is something I really love.

I know that some of the later characters have been changed from men to women but I've heard they did a great job of it so am looking forward to seeing them. (Much the same way the recent BSG changed Starbuck to a woman and it was a wild hit.)

Very new for me. I only heard about the older series and when I saw this I’m suddenly interested. Not many series do that.

They also used all the original music as well, As far as I know, Only 2 new songs were created for the Remake. The UN Cosmo Navy song, sung by the Yukikaze Crew in the first Episode, and the Gamilas National Anthem which comes up later in the series.

By the way this show is in my top 3 favorite Anime.

Something else that I really liked about the first episode that is so often absent in space battle anything is that the Gamilan ship attacked Okita's from the top. Normally in sci-fi series the battles pretty much occur on one plane. But in space obviously vessels are free to maneuver all over the place. "Broadside battles" in space are just... quaint.

Agreed, but one DUMB thing on the Kirishima was putting the Bridge on top of the B turret. Don't you know that complicates everything for the bridge and the turret? Also I missed how the Cosmic Zero http://yamato.wikia.com/wiki/Type-0_Cosmo_Zero had 2 main types the Model 21 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_A6M_Zero#A6M2_Type_0_Model_21) and 52 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_A6M_Zero#A6M5_Type_0_Model_52) Which also were the main models of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero.
